Once-in-lifetime experience to dive with Whale Sharks
My 2 friends and I went to Oslob to dive with whale sharks in Nov 2023 as part of our diving expedition to Moalboal. We did 2 dives; 1st at ~7am when the giant fish were being fed and 2nd at 9am when the feeding was almost done and the whale sharks were swimming around and leaving. We captured these giant fish from all possible angles underwater; captured their silhouette against sun rays penetrating thru’ the clear water, and also up close of the whale sharks’ frontal features and their massive caudal and dorsal fins. I truly enjoyed this surreal experience. I probably would not do this once-in-lifetime experience again but preferably watch them in the wild in my dive expeditions. Reason being, the whale sharks, amounting about 11 in the trip, were likely be resident sharks giving the numerous tears seen on their caudal and dorsal fins and scars on their bodies, probably cut by propellers of motor boats. It wasn’t a pretty sight to behold and we actually felt sad at the state of these giant fish.

The fantastic place where you can enjoy your family and friends
The beauty of place which you can enjoy bounding with friends and family. Aside from its natural beauty. Many people visit and enjoy the place. For the relaxing and enjoying the place the blue beach and all staff was very accommodating.

    Animal cruelty
Do not go here!!! This is the most unethical thing I have ever witnessed. People are touching the whale sharks, they are being fed to lure them into a small area which leads them to swimming into boats and injuring themselves. These animals are supposed to migrate not be fed continuously so the tourists can get ‘the perfect insta shot’ Pure tourist trap and complete animal cruelty. Go diving with them instead in the wild! Don’t do this. Ps a tonne of jellyfish here - witnessed every person having been stung multiple times throughout this activity

    Great experience with whale shark
Well I M a diver and I dove in Thailand to see the whale sharks there, but this place is great experiences for everyone to swimming or to learning about the whale shark. I highly recommend this to everyone. Of course there is a controversy about this activity but for me, I am ok with it.

    Money maker experience
We left our hotel in Moalboal only to find we had a 1 1/2 hour wait for a 30 min snorkel. Yes when we got there the whales were amazing but given the price, time and how long it took to sit there with a what felt like a million people I’m not sure the 30 mins justified the rest. Be warned- maybe if we were we would have appreciated it more!

Scuba Diving with the Whale Sharks
We had to back roll into the water outside of the protected area and swim into the viewing area. We had to stay low to avoid all of the snorkelers above us. Consequently, the pictures were not great because it was a bleak overcast day. Amazing creatures. We got to witness 10 or more of these magnificent creatures glide through the water. Amazing

    Rain or shine DO IT!!
We had the best time at Oslob and canyoneering!! There was rain the whole day but our tour guides were always in good spirits which encouraged us to make the most of it! The shark whales were incredible to look at and be so close to and the canyoneering was so much fun our tour guide gave us a few facts about Kawasaki falls since the hurricane! Would recommend even if there’s some rain! It’s an unforgettable experience!

Incredible day, spent with lovely guides too
This was an absolutely incredible day. Very early start but well worth it. As a solo traveller, felt really safe and supported. Special mention to Princess who was a great companion and guide. Also a great photographer too. The canyoneering was also amazing. The Superman Ziplining was a fun way to get there too. JB (James Bond) was my guide through that. He had a great sense of humour and also took great pics. This whole day experience made my whole trip feel so worth it. I willbe back again with my family.

Inhuman whale shark diving but amazing time canyoneering
The whale shark diving is a joke. Its not special and you cant really dive. You shouldnt touch the sharks because they cam get sick from it. The guys there just put them next to you so you literally have to dodge them. You cant really dive with them because you need to stay close to the boat and the shark get so close. So there is not much room for diving. My visit to the falls was canceled because of the weather. But the canyoneering was the most amazing thing I did for a long time. My tour guide was Ramil, he was very experienced, is fluent in english and I had just a great time with him. So in conclusion whale shark diving is a no go for me but canyoneering is a must have to do

Is it ethical - my personal opinion
I visited Oslob twice, in 2013 and 2015, and the second time was really crowded as hundreds were waiting to go see the sharks. I can see that some people are concerned about the ethicality of whale shark tourism in Oslob. As an animal lover, and especially a big fan of the whale sharks, I would like to share my opinion. 1. In a perfect world, we would love to see wild animals roam free with no interference from humans, and we should close all the zoos and let animals go back to the wild. However, I am sure the majority of people would never have seen a lion if not for zoos, let alone exotic species such as the icon of WWF – the giant panda. Is it important to see animals? Let’s just say, if you’ve never seen a panda, you would not love it, or put in effort to save it. For the whale sharks, some of my Chinese friends who swam with them vowed that they are never eating shark fin soup again. So, the Oslob whale shark operation is at least a good education program. 2. As far as I know, the practice of feeding the sharks in Oslob began decades ago: local fishermen use feeds to lead the sharks away from their fishing area, so that the sharks do not damage their nets. Then some entrepreneur saw this and suggested to the fishermen to turn it into a tourist attraction. The experience of Oslob showed the fishermen all over Philippines that live whale sharks mean $ year after year, so they bought in to the protection program. 3. The guides at Oslob told me that there are only 14 sharks that come to feed here, but not all of them show up everyday, sometimes there are only 3 or 4, so the sharks do not depend on the feed at all. In fact, whale sharks eat tonnes of plankton daily, and there is no way the fishermen can supply them with enough. So the sharks have to feed elsewhere – Oslob is just a snack-stop for them. 4. Since only the same group of sharks show up, these must be non-migrating sharks: they are either resident sharks originally, or they have decided to settle down – which is not uncommon. We humans should understand that animals do not want to migrate if they don’t have to: every year, some 25% of all migrating wildebeests perish in Africa. The animals would avoid it if they can. Several years ago when a director of WWF gave a talk on the subject in Hong Kong, I had an opportunity to discuss with him about Oslob, and he agreed that the verdict is still out on Oslob. In summary, is the Oslob operation non-ethical? I suppose the answer is “yes” by definition; but is it bad for the whale sharks? My answer would be “no”. Is it bad for the tourists? Well, it is getting too crowded!

MY STORY OF USD 200 “DISAPPEARING” FROM MY WALLET

Me and my wife have used this company to do our whale shark diving. After few days, I have noticed 200 USD missing from my wallet.

I am not to this date entirely sure, whether this has happened exactly while doing the shark diving, or later in the hotel, however this was the only place where I have left my belongings out of my eyesight at all. My bag with my wallet was left with the driver in his car, I was made sure and promised it’s safe.

I have reached out to the company with my concern and they promised to check if there is CCTV in the area where the car was parked. I believe this was the least they could do to make me at least feel better and eventually take away that doubt I had in them.

Never heard back from them again, which now makes my doubts even stronger.

I don’t encourage you to use Oslob Whale Shark Watching.

Don't listen to the hype or any misinformation from uninformed individuals on here.
I come from a background in marine conservation, these animals are not trapped here they can come and go as they please, and they do over time. Its new sharks replacing old ones that left on their migrations around the Philippines.

They still complete their purpose and breed as expected.
We never saw any boats bumping into them as many ppl say.

Sharks are also Hardy creatures, please take some time to educate before making comments you don't understand. I ask you to search for a picture of a great white shark online and tell me they don't have scars.
It's part of their life, their skin is thicker than anyone can comprehend. But either way I didn't see any with scarring surprisingly, there was 1 with a part of its fin chipped, who's to say this wasn't a boat in the open ocean that done this as none if these boats had engines......duh!
Thousands of whales and sharks are maimed, or killed in the open ocean by cargo ships and smaller ships alike, but nobody wants to talk about that do they?

Many websites recommend diving with them in cenderwasih Bay, Indonesia. Where the local fisherman feed the sharks, the same sites with then tell you not to do it at oslob because the local fisherman feed the sharks. That's a completely twisted perspective to have if you ask me. You can't have it both ways it's one or the other! It's as if there's some sort of hate against the Filipino people for some reason.

Yes there are lots of people, but no the sharks are not stressed. I have swam with other species of sharks, some are afraid of humans others are not. These are not afraid, here or anywhere else in the world due to their size.
A stressed shark would not stay there and it would leave pretty quickly. They have found a way to cheat the system for extra food with minimal effort.
Given the option, would you rather eat a singular French fry every mile you walked or have an entire portion in 1 place?

We also never seen anybody touching the sharks, and I honestly did expect to see this, which is why we chose to dive instead of snorkel.
But if you do see anyone doing this, please don't hesitate to give them a hard time for it or pull them away. Nobody will learn if you all just keep quiet at the time, then come online and complain about it.

Bottom line, far too many people that don't understand the actual meaning of ethical and unethical.
The sharks have a choice and that's that.

Go to oslob, support the locals, swim or dive with the sharks and be an example to others around you.
Not many places you can swim with a dozen of these majestical creatures at once 🫡

To be completely honest, my husband and I felt like we were cattle being pushed through on this tour. We were the first trip out after sunrise. There were literally 300 people in the swimming area at once with these beautiful gentle giants. They were lured in with shrimp/ feed. It felt very unethical the whole time. We had a Russian guy in our group who constantly kicked the whale sharks and wouldn’t let anyone swim near them as he was ‘getting his shot.’ It was overall just a very strange experience. I almost puked in the water at the smell of all the shrimp/ fish they were throwing into the water with us to lure the sharks. Better off just watching them on National Geographic and not paying into this form of tourism.
From what I understand, whale sharks in this area used to be hunted for their meat, until they became more protected and it was realized money could be made off of ‘showing them off.’ Really feel dirty and disgusted with ourselves for having gone on this tour.

- very early morning pick up from Moalboal which as tough as it was was lovely to get us up and see the sites.
- started with a lovely and light breakfast looking over the water a top a cliff.
- Our guide was Princess and was an absolutely amazing person and guide. We went and did a scuba dive with the whale sharks (this was the first dive for me, one of many for my partner). The experience was so awesome that we also opted into snorkelling to see the whale sharks from above. We then went to tumalog falls which was amazing. - Princess was an incredible guide, so friendly and lovely, even gave my partner a gift for her 30th. - The only negative is the unethical method of attracting the whale sharks by constantly feeding them.

This was an absolutely magical experience, and I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone travelling to Cebu.

There are plenty of tours and guides available to help you if you're looking for an easy, stress-free option (approx 3000 pesos per person). However, I would advise doing the trip by yourself to save a lot of money (oboy 500 pesos per person), and there is no difference in the experience compared to doing it with a tour.
We hired a car for our time in Cebu (5 days) which was definitely worth it as we were able to drive to all our of tourist sights we wanted to see on our own schedule and at a fraction of the tour cost), however, if you are not a confident driver I would advise caution as the Cebu roads and drivers are an experience to say the least.
We set off from our hotel at 5am. to get to the Whale Watching centre early. Regardless, there was a massive queue, but just join on the end and wait your turn.
First, you will need to get a ticket number and advise how many people. Then your ticket number is called to pay at a separate window (just push your way to the front when your ticket is called, and you will be seen immediately). After this, you will be given a receipt, which you need to validate in the building on the right-hand side (the workers are very helpful and will guide you). Then you simply wait for your number to be called, get your life jacket, snorkel and goggles and biadd the boat. You will need your ticket for each step so keep it to hand. Also, there are no lockers to keep your belongings, and they WILL get wet on the boat. We just left ours on the beach, and it was fine. You can also rent fins and go pros before you board the boat at reasonable prices.
Once you are on the boat, it takes about 30 seconds to sail out to the whales and then you have 30 minutes to swim with the Whale Sharks. I cannot express enough how AMAZING this experience was. The WS were literally swimming directly with us, they are so close (within touching distance, but you see not allowed to touch them). They are incredibly gentle, majestic and HUGE. It was truly wonderful and I highly highly recommend it.

Upon arrival at Cebu Airpirt, you have to land tour we had a bus for 6 hrs to Oslob. We checkendin Sacha's resort (2nd time) but now with our son. We booked for the whaleshark sighting at the reception. The whaleshark is scheduled the next day at 6am. Upon arrival they have to explain about the do's and don'ts in the ocean. You have to ride a small boat, each boat is 6 or 5 persons. They will bring you at the middle of the ocean. Where you can see up close with a lot of gentle giants or (Buntanding). They eat plankton so you dont have to be scared. They are so cute in close up.

Omg this a must thing to do! We slept in moalboal and took the scooter to Oslob, it was 1,5/2 hrs ride but it was worth it! Actually we saved 4000 pesos to go by motorbike, because a tour was 2500 pesos a person. When you're there they sell mobile phone underwater things so you can take pictures by yourself, but you also can hire a go pro for 500 pesos. The whale shark were so close you can touch them! Really amazing!
