Learn about the culinary culture of Hong Kong on a private food tour with a knowledgeable guide. Primarily Cantonese Chinese, the local cuisine features small differences that reflect the city’s combination of Chinese and British history. Across five stops, you’ll sample dishes such as dim sum, wonton noodle soup, milk tea and an egg tart. As you eat, you’ll also learn about the history of food in Hong Kong, from traditional Guangzhou to Western influences.
What to Expect
Your tour starts by meeting your private guide in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong Island. Head to an old tea house for your first dish, a traditional dim sum breakfast (yum cha) served by trolley, which you’ll enjoy amid the restaurant’s atmosphere—lively and popular with a history that dates back nearly 100 years.

Next, visit a family-run shop from the 1960s, recommended in the Michelin Guide, for wonton noodles, a local specialty that may be simple but can only be perfected by a master. Then continue with a cup of milk tea, one of the most ever-present pieces of Hong Kong’s culinary scene left over from the days of British rule.

Hop on the Hong Kong tramway, aka Ding Ding (own expense), for the ride to another family-run restaurant, which dates back to the Qing dynasty (pre-20th century) and is known for English roast meat (char siu). Sample a mixture of traditional roasted meats served with homemade sauces and rice. Finally, finish up with an egg tart (dan tat in Cantonese), another Chinese take on an English treat, the custard tart. You’ll enjoy it at a local bakery with a 60-year history—a personal favorite of a former Hong Kong governor.

Throughout your tour, learn about Hong Kong’s food heritage, plus visit other culinary venues like a dried seafood shop, a Chinese medicine shop and the city’s oldest wet market. Areas you’ll visit include Central and Wan Chai.
