Value and experience far exceeded my expectations.
I was fortunate enough to do the three day trek with this company. I was “the group” and as the solo trekker I had lots of great attention and care for safety given some rainy weather. The hike in non restored sections was breathtaking and even the restored portion was no piece of cake in spots. My guide Woody was informative and had a good sense of humour. The Great Wall Inn where I spent a couple of nights had one of the most comfortable beds I have have found in my 4 years living in China. The owners were kind and generous and the food was amazing. So grateful I had this experience and with all the research in options to select for this experience I definitely picked the right company. Thanks to Gary the boss, Woody the guide, and Jason the safe driver for making this once in a lifetime trek so memorable!

Very professional. The three day trek is not difficult
I had booked with this organisation after much research on what is possible for a multi day trek on the Great Wall. As I was travelling on my own, safety was important, and on that front, they certainly delivered. I had both a driver and a guide. The driver was truly excellent, and the car (a new model Volkswagen Passat) was sparkling clean and high quality. My guide Peter spoke excellent English and was extremely knowledgeable about the Wall’s history, etc. This was a huge advantage, compared to other independent hikers I saw who were simply zipping along without the context and amazing history. So for these reasons, I would definitely recommend this company. They are certainly not cheap, but it would be far more affordable if you don’t do it solo. Also, I wanted to get away from the teeming hoards of people that you see photos of near Beijing. Success! We were definitely on a more remote section of the wall, and there were sometimes hours between sightings of other trekkers. Which was great. Three things let it down, that made me give four stars and not five. Perhaps these are unavoidable. First, the accommodation is very basic. For the price you pay, I would have expected better. Having said that, we were staying quite off the tourist trail, so there probably weren’t a lot of options. They also own one place that we were at for two nights. You can read my review of that place under “Great Wall Inn” in Gubeikou. Second, I had thought this three day / two night trek would be tough, as it is certainly written up that way. It most decidedly is not. If you are an experienced hiker (as I am), and have a modicum of fitness, the reality is these are half day walks strung out to give the appearance of full day treks. I would rate the walking as moderate. Of course, that is for someone who is very experienced. I certainly saw a lot of people suffering in some areas, including my guide. So I know it is all relative. Which brings me to my third point. My guide simply did not have a level of fitness to match my own, so I was often waiting for him on the steeper sections, and also carried gear/ food for him, to assist him on two of the days. Although we joked about it, and he let me go ahead at times, the reality is this was a limiting factor for how far we could go. He was definitely setting the pace, not me. Again, this likely wouldn’t be a problem for most clients. My last little complaint was that I am a coffee fiend, and China is not the place to get a decent coffee. But even so, I would have been happy to have instant Nescafé, which would have tasted like manna from heaven compared to the instant crappy version we had. Again, my guide was not a coffee drinker, and when we were getting food at a grocery store for the trek, he insisted we didn’t need any Nescafé, as he had some coffee for me. Big mistake. So if you go, make sure you bring your own coffee option with you, if coffee is important to you. Ha ha. I hope that helps! I am glad I went with this company, and can I say that this itinerary is certainly worthwhile for getting a good Great Wall experience.

Two day Great Wall hike Gubeikou-Jinshanling-Simatai led by expert guide
The adventure of a lifetime! Thanks to good fortune plus meticulous preparation and care by our guide Peter and his team throughout, we were able to experience the most extraordinary wild wall and its surroundings in perfect conditions - almost entirely alone, just after a snowfall, and sparkling clear sunshine. The views are spectacular, the history is astonishing, and remember - this is a defensive wall, through some pretty steep mountains, so expect to go up and down at 70 degrees, frequently! This was a strenuous but entirely doable two days of hiking for us as a fit couple in our sixties. Our particular route included some off-wall sections which we really enjoyed - it was great to hike through snowy valleys amongst birds and chestnut orchards. Every metre of the route was spectacular and the whole experience was one of the most joyful and uplifting in my life. Peter picked us up at our hotel and on the ride out, gave us a fascinating briefing about the history of the great wall including beautifully annotated maps and notes for us to read later. He and our very experienced driver got us up and going on the trail with a minimum of fuss, yet helpful items like hiking poles for us to borrow. Our guide was always careful to inform us what was going on and to consult us about every decision and option along the way, while being very careful about our safety. We had enough breaks, but it was too cold to take long breaks. We hiked about 10 km on Day 1. Peter continued to add layers of understanding in manageable chunks, from the extraordinary sticky-rice-enhanced cement used with locally baked bricks to the ways the wall was only part of a larger defensive system, to translating the individually-marked quality stamps in every 100th brick, telling the stories of who made and who laid the bricks in each section. There is quite a hike down off the wall at Jinshanling and then another km or so of regular road that is not open to the public - our amazing guide Peter arranged a shuttle van to take us along that section back to the main road to meet our regular driver. On the way to our overnight accommodation in what they call a farmer's house, which is basically a BnB setup, we went for a feast of a late lunch at a local restaurant. Another feast was on offer for dinner but when we opted for an early night, our guide was able to rustle up a fresh fruit tray for us in moments - just an example of the exceptional care we received at all times. Day 2 was just as amazing. We were so excited that Peter proposed an early start, to get up to the top of the wall for sunrise - it was around -15C when we left the BnB in the darkness but totally worth it to be on top of the world as the sun made its way over the furthest peaks around 7:30 am. Most of the day was on restored sections of the wall, which does make the hiking easier, but towards the end we ventured back onto wild wall sections and also off the wall again. Each different terrain has its own charm but don't underestimate the challenge of hiking through rough ground and scattered fallen stones and bricks covered by snow, all on steep slopes. On the way back to Beijing Peter took us to a brilliant Mongolian-style hotpot restaurant and ever the courteous host, he taught us a whole lot more about the different hotpot cultures and the make-up of the dipping sauce he personally mixed for us. Everything including beer was included in this experience-of-a-lifetime tour.

Best way to see The Great Wall of China!
We were able to customize the 2 day itinerary by adding an additional day and it was well worth the money! Commission from the main office was flawless as well as that of the trekking guide. Yashin our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the wall and local areas we traveled through. We had to make an adjustment one evening last minute and although he had never had a change in itinerary he handled it flawlessly! Everything went smoothly and with great ease! Jason our driver was always on time and his vehicle spotless. No difficulty with the language barrier either: Yashin spoke perfect English! I will say that although this was advertised as an intermediate trek it was a bit more challenging so I would prepare yourself a little beforehand. Accessing the wall each day involves a big of a vertical climb through the woods! Great trip, great company and the best way to see the wall!

    Great experience
I cannot find the perfect word to describe this amazing experience! Heart, mind, body all activated to live the experience. First of all the magnitude and extension of such human construction, political and strategical activity, human effort, splendorous nature... historical events... then your body, all in action and full of expectations. After... million of people doing the same activity. I had the opportunity to do the hicking in 3 different paths. All of them are great. Different view and difficulty. Absolutly great experience.

    Jinshanling private hiking tour
My sister and I did the Jinshanling private hiking tour. Peter was our guide and he was very knowledgable. He told us all the ins and outs of the wall and its history. On top of that he is a great photographer who goes out of his way to take a large variety of photos. Transportation and food was good and the driver was great. Highly recommend this experience!

    Can't recommend this company enough!
We did a 3 day private tour with our guide Peter. He was knowledgable, an excellent guide, and a fantastic photographer! We trekked with our 7 month old baby and everyone was incredibly accomodating and kind. It was perfect for our small family and the places that they took us to on the Great Wall were spectacular. Our driver Jason was also great and we felt they couldn't do enough for us. I would highly recommend this company. Although it isn't the cheapest option, it was worth every penny.

    The unbeaten Great Wall
Me and my husband did the 5 day hiking trip. The best part for us was that they took us to parts of the wall that are not touristy so there were many times that we were by ourselves hiking, just taking in the massive landscapes and the nature. The trip was extremely well organized, the driver was always on time to pick us up, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and his english was impeccable. They were very accommodating when we asked them that we wanted to see the sunrise or sunset on the wall, and they timed the itinerary around that. The guesthouses were simple but clean and the food was delicious, we had homecooked meals everyday, we even learned to make dumplings! Overall it was an amazing experience and highly highly recommend it.

    Memories for the whole live
My husband, my daughter and I spent two days hiking and camping on and along the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty with our Guide Peter on the 13th/14th of August 2019. It was one of the highlights of our journey to China . Peter cared for us in such a touching way that it felt like family. Imagine sleeping in a tent at an old watchtower, having dinner freshly cooked by a local farmer - in fact it was the best dinner we had during our whole journey - and watching sunrise holding a cup of hot Chinese tea in one hand and a warm, soft Chinese pancake in the other. During our hike we didn't meet anybody - unusal and hardly unbelievable for Chinese conditions. However, You are recommended not to underestimate length and steepness of the tour, but If You are used to walking and hiking in Your leisure time, You we will be definitely fine. Finally, I would say, it was Peter, who made this tour an unforgetable experience for the three of us and at least it should be noted that Peter is a great fotographer who took lots of pictures of us. Thank You Peter

He also offered us some hiking sticks. Cheney also took a lot of amazing pictures from us. He was really friendly all the time. Exhilarating: Gubeikou & Jinshanling
First time, 2 days, 1 night on the Great Wall. Definitely a re-do with Great Wall Adventure Club. Day 1: Jiankou-Mintanyu-- 8 miles and 140 flights of stairs! #walking poles & hightop hiking boots! Day 2: Gubeikou - Jinshanling-- 5 miles and 200 flights of stairs! The guide was patient and very knowledgeable, we felt we were in good hands. However, our guide tried to avoid paying the wall & gondola fees and made us walk- Until I caught on and reminded him our trip was 'all inclusive'. Also, make sure he doesn't make you hike TO the wall. First day we hiked 1.25 hours up the mountain to reach the great wall. If you don't see the wall when the driver drops you off, that means your hiking to it!! I want to spend my time ON the wall. I'm still giving the company a great review, as I would use them again. Recommend you make things clear up front.

    Absolutely Beautiful
My boyfriend and I signed up for the GWTA17 14 km tour: Gubeikou, Jinshanling, and Simatai. It was absolutely beautiful. The view is just stunning and you can see the wall for miles. The whole area is surrounded mountains and is hands down the best views I've ever seen. Our tour guide Luis was very nice, he knows so much history and gave us plenty of time for water and breaks. Unfortunately decided we couldn't complete the 14km, but Luis was very understanding and we exited after ~ 8km with no issues, our car was already waiting by the time we made it down. 10/10 would recommend to everyone! Even though we didn't make it the whole way, we had an unforgettable experience, 8km gave us plenty to see.

    An Incredible Life Experience!
This was an amazing, incredible life experience. The hikes were incredible, (though day 1 was hot and day 2 was wet). The guide, who is also the innkeeper at the Great Wall Inn Gubeikou was friendly, helpful, spoke english and is as sure-footed as a mountain goat! Great Wall Hiking provided cold water (though I brought my own water too) as well as a much appreciated and helpful hiking stick. The accommodations at the Great Wall Inn Gubeikou were wonderful - it is clean, comfortable and the homemade food is delicious! You can see my review here: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g294212-d15273846-r702129107-Great_Wall_Inn_Gubeikou-Beijing.html I highly recommend this adventure and highly recommend Great Wall Hiking!

We took the tour with Great Wall Hiking in early July. The entire process was smooth and professional.

I contacted Gary about the hike in May. He was prompt to reply. In our interactions, he was always clear, friendly, and flexible. His English is impeccable. The information in the PDF provided by the company is clear and detailed.

On the day of the hike, our guide Jason and our driver Mr Zhang arrived early to pick us up. Jason is a great guide — he’s open, knowledgeable, and has interesting perspectives to share. The pace of the hike was good, Jason’s explanations were informative, and the lunch was tasty. We left and came back as per schedule.

When we look back on our trip, this tour was a highlight. We spent one month in China, went to many museums, historical sites, etc. The Great Wall tops anything I have seen in China and elsewhere in the world. There is just no other place that will offer you both a site of great historical significance and human genius, but also breath-taking views of nature. Hiking the wall means walking over mountains for kilometers onwards on a historical monument.

Could you do this on your own and pay less? Sure. But it would probably a pain. Knowing exactly which part of the wall to go to, getting dropped and picked up there, getting to speak to an informed local with a rich background… That’s all worth the price, especially since China is only slowly reopening to foreigners and there are many hurdles to get over. If you want to have a perfect, worryfree experience, I’d recommend you book the tour immediately.

I’m already thinking about when I can go back next and book the longer trip with Great Wall Hiking!

Hi Lochin, thanks for your kind review! I'm very glad that you enjoyed the adventure hiking with us on the Great Wall of China! It's extremely busy for domestic travelers this summer holiday after 3-year covid. Luckily the sections we're operating hiking adventures are not popular among domestic travelers, and a much better experience to avoid crowds in this HOT summer. We're looking forward to your next visit to more remote sections of the Great Wall in Hebei & Shanxi provinces. All the best! Gary

Since tourism hasn't quite bounded back after China's years of zero-Covid policy, this tour was only available as a private tour rather than a small group tour. Which meant, as a solo traveler, I was paying a not insignificant amount. But it was worth it.

I know there are other ways of seeing the Great Wall. There are wheelchair accessible sections and sections where you can go up by cable car and down by toboggan. There are sections where there are so many people you can barely see the wall itself. There are tours that take you there and back from Beijing in a half-day.

If that is what you want/need, go for it. But if you are open to reserving a full day and participating in some semi-strenuous hiking, you will be rewarded with zero crowds, gorgeous scenery, the ability to see both restored and unrestored sections of the wall, and a truly unique experience.

Most of us only get one shot to go to The Great Wall. You can trust Gary and his crew to make it count.

Dear TheophaniaSeattle Thanks for your kind review! We're glad that you enjoyed the hiking adventure with us on the Great Wall. At this season, it's truly no crowds at all and you almost have the Wall to yourself only. The weather was also perfect in the past week which help producing amazing photos. Yes, China's domestic tourism is fully back, but international travelers are not yet. Currently the group tour is suspended and mainly private tours are available. Wish you a great day and look forward to your next visit to the Wall in future! Best regards Gary

I found this agency watching "Alan por el mundo" YouTube channel and the recommendation was simply great. The company communication is fluent and fast, also the way of payment and follow-up.

The companion of Woddy our guide was amazing, the tour began on the way from the hotel picked up to the Great Wall and was a top-of-the-line history class about the origins of the Great Wall and the history of Chinese dynasties.

The walk of a life-changing experience and the locals were so kind and welcoming that you get to feel special.

I hope that anyone that is planning on visiting China take this trip or many others available to really taste this beautiful and friendly country.

God bless you all.

Hi Carlos Thank you so much for the review! We're very pleased that you enjoyed the hiking with Woody Yaxin on the Great Wall of China! We're very honored to organise and escort your family on the Great Wall! Woody was actually the guide to escort Alan a few years ago. We've been away from the Great Wall for 3 years! Your feedback made us confident again and our business is still alive! We're keen to share the life-changing experience with travelers all over the world!! Best regards Woody & Gary

Fantastic experience. I just went with myself and my dad and our tour guide, Jimmy. We went pre-pandemic, this is a late review. But when we went it was fantastic. Since it was just our small group it was very personal and we could tailor the day to whatever we wanted to do. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and history.

You can (fairly) easily see the Great Wall closer, cheaper, and less strenuously than on this tour. What made this tour great WAS the physical challenge and the remoteness of the section visited. My guide Peter took me to Dinjangling, a sparsely populated area on the far outskirts of Beijing.

Peter spent the long drive to the site explaining the rich history of the wall network’s construction. I dare say I came away with a much greater understanding of modern China by learning about this important piece of its past. When you’ve been fending off invaders to your homeland for centuries, it tends to have a strong influence on one’s national psyche and policies at home and abroad.

This tour is for people who want a good workout with a great amount of history and fascinating facts thrown in. I consider myself a pretty experienced hiker, yet some steep stair descents forced me onto my hands and behind to avoid tumbling face-first off the wall. Total hiking time was only a few hours, but the many elevation changes made it a worthy challenge.

Some unexpected highlights: Receiving a shiny thumb drive full of photos Peter took of me and unique Wall features during the hike. In addition to being a superb historian, he is also an excellent photographer! We ate lunch at a rural roadside restaurant; what it lacked in five-star Beijing opulence, it made up for in local authenticity and flavor.

I went during the low season (late November), so there were only a few people on the wall peddling wares to passersby, and even fewer tourists. It made for a memorable and truly private first encounter with one of China’s best-known marvels.

I went in early November, luckily the weather was still good and in fact it felt quite warm at times. I went solo and we formed a small group of one couple and another solo traveller with Peter as our guide. Learned a lot about the history and features of the wall. While there were other people at Jinshanling, it was by no means crowded (noting November is the beginning of low season). In terms of the walk itself, a few steep areas but if you're of average fitness (ie walking and stairs are usually no issue) with grippy shoes (I wore running shoes) you'll be fine - the stairs to the top at the beginning I found more strenuous than the wall itself (but I hate stairs).

My review sounds underwhelming but it was absolutely amazing - I'm glad I picked Jinshanling and this company to take me as it was pretty much a perfect experience, with enough variability in the walk to make it fun, excellent views and an escape from crowds. Highly recommended.

Our guide was Tao. He is very knowledgeable about Beijing and the Great Wall. The group that I went with was 8 people. We all definitely bonded after our trek on the Wall! Trekking the Wall felt physically demanding and challenging. There are hiking sticks that are provided at the beginning. I wish I used one, although other people felt like it ended up being something else they had to carry. The initial climb up the stairs to get to the Wall was by far the most challenging part! Luckily, a local dog joined us for the beginning and made it that much more fun. When you're on the Wall, the views are incredible. It was cold, but the weather was overall great for a hike. The lunch that is provided at a local restaurant is delicious as well. This was definitely a highlight on my trip. :)

This was an excellent trip and way to see the Great Wall. It was a challenging hike with lots of steep parts going up and down, but amazing views so totally worth it. The tour guide, Tao, was great and was able to tell us a lot about the history of China. Definitely the highlight of my trip to Beijing and something I would do again!

Very challenging but we enjoyed every minute of it. If you are fit and like the outdoors, this is for you. We were a group of 6, and learned a lot about China and the Wall thanks to our guide Dany. Thanks Dany!

It was an amazing walk in the wall, the tour guide "Danny" had all the information regarding chinese culture and The Great Wall, and was kind enough to answer all of our questions. With a tour like this your only concern is to be on time at the meeting point in the morning, then you just have to enjoy.

If you wanna visit the wall i stongly recommend that you use this tour

It was one in a lifetime experience

Thanks
