Half-Day Saqqara Pyramids and Memphis Tour from Cairo
From US$52.00
Overview
Rewind to the Egypt of nearly 5,000 years ago on this 4-hour tour to Saqqara and Memphis from Cairo. Traveling by air-conditioned vehicle with a knowledgeable guide, head to Saqqara to view the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the world’s oldest large-scale stone monument. Learn why it was built, and then view the relics of Memphis, the ancient capital of Lower Egypt. Learn about its heyday in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and visit the outdoor museum to see some of its treasures, including a colossal statue of Ramses II.
What to Expect
Depart central Cairo by air-conditioned vehicle and journey south to Saqarra, home to one of the world’s greatest antiquities — the oldest step pyramid still standing. As you travel, hear intriguing tales of Saqarra, and how this desert area was used as a burial ground for Memphis, Lower Egypt’s ancient capital.

After roughly an hour, pull up at your destination and stroll to the magnificent Step Pyramid of Zoser. Marvel at the vast structure as your guide recounts how it was constructed in the 27th century BC as the tomb of the Pharaoh Zoser.
Learn about the main features of the flat-topped, 4,600-year-old pyramid and hear how it ranks as the world’s oldest large-scale stone monument. Admire the smaller pyramids around it, and then continue to the site of Memphis. Founded in around 2,900 BC and a center of power for over 3,000 years, this aeons-old city is believed to have been purpose-built and was characterized by majestic temples and palaces.

Explore the city’s last remaining vestiges around the villages of Dahshur and Saqqara, and visit the open-air museum that houses broken statues, carvings and columns found at the site. Marvel at the prize exhibit — a huge, fallen statue of Ramses II — and enjoy the crowd-free atmosphere. The relics here attract fewer visitors than those in Cairo, so you can admire them in quiet surroundings.

Afterward, return to Cairo where your tour ends at the start point.

Very professional and exceedingly flexible

I had a spare half-day in Cairo and this tour worked out incredibly well. As good as the tour was, CUA's responsiveness, flexibility, and no-hassle approach was just as notable and a real breath of fresh air -- in Cairo, I found this a rarity....More
