What to expect
  • After you meet your guide in the district of Karaköy, hop aboard the metro and ride one of the world’s oldest underground funiculars to the Beyoğlu district for your evening food tour. Begin with an off the beaten path walk through Istanbul’s winding corridors for popular bites and bevs. With your guide, discover how east and west cultures influence the culinary delights that drive this city’s intriguing food scene. Make a pit stop and taste a piece of borek, a moorish pastry with meat or potatoes and a delicious cheesy filling. Then, wash it all down with a cup of ayran, a traditional yogurt beverage. Next, stroll with the locals into a popular meyhane to enjoy meze favorites like patlican salatasi (eggplant purée). Pair your food with some raki, Turkey’s classic anise flavored spirit, as hear about the pastime of meyhanes and the different ingredients that help create Turkey’s tastiest plates. Continue to a teahouse where the Young Turks, rebels from the early 20th century, formerly convened to unite the country in an effort to bring democracy into Turkey. Sip on Turkish tea here before you visit some yummy food stalls to partake in local food favorites such as midye dolma (rice-filled mussels) and icli kofte. Gear up your sweet tooth as you enter the Çiçek Passage to indulge in Turkish delight and mouthwatering baklava, a flaky pastry smothered and stuffed with honey and nuts. Then, either try the Maras region’s beloved cikolata (chocolate) or some creamy ice cream. Afterward, stroll to Taksim Square and satiate a craving you didn’t know you had as you bite into an islak or ‘wet burger’ known for its buns dripping in tomato sauce. Last but not least, stop for a Turkish coffee at a popular joint and relax here as your tour comes to a close. Feel free to stay here or return to your hotel at your leisure.

Not for ‘foodies’
Oct 2019 • Family
We had high expectations when we booked this ‘evening food tour in Istanbul’. As self confessed foodies and passionate home cooks as well we thought we would be tasting the best that Turkey had to offer. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case. In fact I would say I would not book another of these tours through urban adventures. We paid over $100 Aus per person for a piece of cheese, melon. a fig. Half a deep fried meat cake, a mussel, half a roll with offal on it ( which I couldn’t eat), coffee, a small square of baclava and a ‘wet burger’. Of all the beautiful meats, spices and tasty offerings in Turkey I think urban adventures are definitely working on a huge profit margin with these meagre offerings. Our guide was a really nice guy and it was a nice group of people but we have done a number of food tours all over the world and this was probably our most disappointing.

Interesting tour but overpriced
Although the tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, the first destination had run out of the promised food and we were left with a very ordinary pastry. Some of the tour destinations were only ok, nothing very special. It seemed like the guide was stepping in for someone else, and that he didn't regularly lead this tour.
For the amount that was paid for this tour I would not recommend.

Well worth the cost
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. We are a party of five and all had a great evening. The food we tried was all different -some off the street and some in small restaurants. By the end of the evening we were all full of delicious food and some Raki as well
We do a lot of this type of tour around the world and our guide Salih was one of the best ever. We learned such a lot about Turkey in general as well as the food.
Highly recommended

A Special experience
Apr 2019 • Solo
I was told of this night tasting tour by another traveller and it is just as the information in the brochure says it is!! My local guide Beyza led me thru the back lanes and market stalls explaining the local street food and encouraged me to try things that I might not have tried. The food was both authentic and delicious. A truly wonderful experience.

Delicious!
Our food tour experience was amazing. Our guide, Salih, was super knowledgeable and took us to some great places. We enjoyed tasting the street food but also tasting foods in sit down restaurants. The pace of the tour was great and by the end we were stuffed! My husband and I would highly recommend for anyone traveling to Istanbul.

Great tour
Nov 2018 • Couples
We did the night tour with Burak. We were only two people on tour. Do not expect to see Old Town or tourist spots . We spent all our time going through local spots where we often the only non-Turks. I don't think we could have found the spots on our own. Great food and plenty of it. Burak is a great guide. Strongly recommend doing night tour early in your Istanbul stay. Great city with great food and warm people.

Best thing we did in Istanbul
Aug 2018 • Couples
Tolga from Urban adventures was our personal guide to walking around Istanbul and trying incredible local cuisine. We loved all the food and learning about the history of Istanbul and Turkey at the same time. Our only regret is we wish we had done it sooner.
Great job Tolga would definitely book another tour through Intrepid and Urban Adventured again!

Wonderful experience for a solo female traveler
I am a solo female traveler and I'm also Chinese-American. That's 3 strikes, because in many places where I travel I often receive a lot of aggressive and sometimes predatory attention. It makes it hard for someone like me to get the 'authentic' experience that comes with anonymity or blending in as a local.

I've always been a little leery of guided tours, alert to ulterior motives like shipping trips, upselling or overly flashy displays of culture choreographed more for entertainment than for authentic learning. That was why this particular tour was such a pleasant surprise.

First, our guide Burak was lovely. It's clear he cared about his community and had personal affectionate ties to the owners of the places we visited. With Burak, I got to see little magical nooks and local spots I would maybe never have had the courage to venture into alone. The street food scene reminded me a lot of the night markets in Taiwan, and sampling non-kebap foods was a lot of fun. Plus, Burak was very knowledgeable about Istanbul, and from him I was gained insight into its current changing sociopolitical and economic climate from the perspective of a local who loved his city and not blindly. And not once did anyone try to sell us anything! The whole experience was purely about the food and the culture, and overall it was such a breath of fresh air. And safe, because basically I felt invisible enough to feel free to openly take everything in.

For those of you who want to take a break from being a tourist, this is an experience I recommend!
