My guide was friendly, relaxed, chatty and informative. We tried a lot of different food. They can easily adapt the tour to suit different food needs and preferences. Just tell them at the beginning. Would defo recommend opting for the 6pm tour over day to soak up the buzzy Old Town evening atmosphere. Make it the first thing you do when you arrive to fully benefit from and use the knowledge you acquire!

This was a really great walking food tour of Hanoi. It was a great way of trying a variety of meals, as well as trying out foods that might have otherwise been very intimidating to try out as a tourist whilst also talking about the history of the city and the notable streets. Mr Ha clearly has good rapport with all of the stop points we made and he added a few impromptu stops along the way that meant we were totally stuffed full at the end! It’s hard to pick a favourite but I really liked ça cuon, a fried fish roll with port and mushroom bits in as well as Bun cha

If you’re on the fence, do it. I had a great food tour with Minh. It felt like an enthusiastic, upbeat cousin/friend was showing us around. Ask for Minh. He seems to mainly do night tours, but check before you book.
I’ve done different food tours on vacations and sometimes they charge heaps more than what the food costs, but this one had excellent value. Try doing this food tour on your first day to get a feel for the food in Hanoi, and you can return to the places you like.
Minh shared lots of stuff about Vietnam, not only food. Minh taught us how not to be a chicken crossing the road, he taught us about the school system in Vietnam, he taught us how expensive houses in the Old Quarter can be (in the millions—USD!), etc. He knows great spots for pictures. Minh mumbled to himself that he loves portrait mode, told us where to stand, and snapped pictures of my mom and me. As a Millennial or Gen Z, he’s a pro at taking cell phone pics.
Now onto the food. We had bun cha, sugar cane juice (tastes better than coconut water, ours had a squeeze of kumquat), some other noodle dish that wasn’t pho, papaya and meat salad, egg coffee, kumquat juice, dessert (my mom had yogurt with fruits and I had coconut ice cream with green colored sweet rice), and chicken curry banh mi. Yes, I could’ve had these food items on my own, but I wouldn’t haven known some of the stuff I ate nor how to eat them (even though I live next to Little Saigon in Orange County, California).
MINH: mil gracias por un food tour increíble. Stay fabulous!

Thank you so much to Chris for showing us around your "hood" and helping to fill our bellies! We were initially intimidated by all the street food options in just the Old Quarters alone and we did not have time for trial and error during our short stay. Chris' picks were wonderful and we had the perfect mixture of sweet and savory. He did not pressure anyone into eating anything they were not comfortable with and he always offered alternatives. However, he gave great recommendations which we stuck with and enjoyed immensely. He also entertained our questions about what life was like living in Vietnam as we sat and ate. A nice touch was that when is started pouring down rain, the guides kindly bought us ponchos so that we could continue the tour without interruption. We had nine stops on our tour and my husband, who is a bottomless pit most days, was stuffed by the end. We received an email the next day with the names of the food and the places we stopped. Also, there were several other recommendations in that email that we tried the next day with a second DIY food tour!

I really like the fact that our food guide Chris explained everything related to the food we were going to eat with some context. It was either a story related to the restaurant, a cultural aspect or the vietnamese history. The food tour was something i really wanted to do in Vietnam and I think going with a guide made it even more easier. We were going around Hanoi's old quarter in a small group and it was very convenient due to the fact that Hanoi is a very busy city. The food was exquisite!!! Chris knew all the good spots!

Our food tour guide Lucky is very knowledgeable and charming . He has a great sense of humour and brought us to so many wonderful family owned spots to try Vietnamese food. He educated us on the specialities of Hanoi. The 7 places we stopped had such delicious food and we were so full we could only eat small amounts. However Lucky very kindly provided follow up in the form an email so we can continue to try these new foods on our own. I highly recommend taking this tour !

First of all, I really had a great experience on this tour and I believe this was in very large part due to our amazing guide, Andy. He was very knowledgeable about the food and the city and taught us a bit about the history of Vietnam.
I've traveled around Asia quite a bit and have lived in Mexico, so while some people may be slightly turned off by the standards of cleanliness or seating options in some of the restaurants, what I experienced on the tour seemed mostly pretty standard. I think the places that were chosen were great and probably well-known for what they serve and I never felt anything was unclean or a health hazard.
Some other posts have pointed out a couple things that I'll repeat as they're worth the organizer considering in order to improve the tour in the future.
1. There are a number of tour restaurants the guide chooses from but it wouldn't be too hard to provide a list of food that will be sampled (take pictures and show those particular places to be visited on that day's tour). It'll definitely help those on the tour to budget their appetites and maybe ask for a bit more if there's something they really love.
2. Someone wrote in a previous review: "For the price of this tour, I would have appreciated the option of not splitting almost everything with my partner. Street food is really cheap in Vietnam. We ate about $5 US worth of food on this tour." I would tend to agree with this comment. We were presented with reasonable portions for a food tour and although I'm sure we could have requested more it would have made me feel a bit awkward to do so in front of the other customers. We were not told by the guide that this may have been an option until dessert time when someone in the group jokingly said "I want another" and Andy, our guide immediately said" ok...I'll go get another for you" but she said "no no I'm fine, just joking".
I definitely could have eaten more of the delicious banh cuon and a whole banh mi sandwich as opposed to the half I was given (and another glass of beer!) Street food is cheap and the price doesn't really add up for what we ate. On my food tour in Phuket a few weeks back there was always more food than we could finish so no awkwardness in helping yourself. With the coronavirus scare happening these days people may be reluctant to share from a common plate but let us know from the start if it's an option to ask for a bit more or not.
Apart from that, I left with a pretty full belly and was very satisfied overall. Thanks again Andy, you were great!

Our guide Chris was awesome and took us to a variety of places to eat - some on busy streets and some in little alleys. We enjoyed many different types of food and desserts - everything was delicious! Chris told us about the food but also about the culture and his own experiences which made it even more interesting. It was just fun walking through the streets of old town on a very busy Sunday night taking in all the sights and sounds. A must do in Hanoi!

We had a wonderful time on the food tour with Minnie. She accommodated a group change when we let her know that friends we intended to meet had ended up with a different guide, and also accommodated my no-cilantro and my friend's no-beef/pork restrictions. Everything that we had was delicious. Minnie did a great job of explaining everything to us and even bought us each two beers when we explained we would prefer that to one beer and one soft drink. I would absolutely recommend this tour, and Minnie to anyone who wants to learn about core Vietnamese foods and try some delicious ones!

Very good tour with Lucky, who was a very fun and engaging guide. We ate a lot of food, and the portion sizes were manageable. I particularly appreciated Lucky explaining parts of Vietnamese culture and some Hanoi food history, which really helped me get a feel for Hanoi on my first full day in the city.
The only thing I wish is that there had been a few more unconventional dishes. It felt a little like the food tour was checking off all the dishes tourists might want to eat, rather than showing some truly unique or unusual food.

If this is the only way to go on a street food tour then I would suggest you join up with the group. Your tour guide should be able to tell you where they are - I think we went to 6 places so you would get at least 4 in!

I thought I had made a reservation yesterday to join your small group Hanoi street food tour on January 9 at 11:30. I provided my credit car information, etc. but never received an email confirmation. If you already have my reservation on file, please send me an email confirmation. If you do not have a reservation in my name, please let me know so that I can make a reservation.

It’s a close call. If moon and stars align and you have smooth sailing after arrival, it could work. Traffic is a big deal, it’s not the distance. Do it the next day and you won’t have to worry about it.

Yes! Though I’m not personally a vegetarian, one of the people in our group was. Our tour guide was SO attentive to providing not just vegetarian but vegan and allergy friendly alternatives that didn’t skip on flavor. Just make sure to mention your dietary restrictions at the beginning of the tour. Hope that helps!

I would like to know what ideas you have or details before I book please. Look forward to a favourable response.

Hello, I will be in Hanoi for a week for work and travelling with some colleagues. We often do not finish for the day in time to make a 6 pm start to the Tour. Is it possible to start the tour around 7 pm one night? This looks and sounds like a great experience so hopefully there is some flexibility in the schedule. This would be for up to 6 people. Cheers, Matt

We did go on a tour with Small-Group Hanoi Food Tour with a Real Foodie.
We went 6 pm to 9 pm but I'm sure you can negotiate times to suit your day. They are flexible people.
Ask for Luke Tran, a really nice young guy Roger Lameywho definitely knows his stuff. He's great.
We have been on 2 food tours on previous visits to Hanoi.
Luke's was the best by far.
