What to Expect
Get picked up at you Poipu-area hotel in a comfortable Ford van and meet your guide, a professionally trained archaeologist. Learn background info on the south shore’s natural history with a visual presentation before traveling through former sugar cane fields to the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. Enter the cave itself, the largest limestone cave in Hawaii and a treasure trove of fossils and other geologic clues to the island’s past.

Back in the light of day, take a guided nature hike through reserve, where carefully restored habitats shelter a wide variety of plant and animal species. Take in fantastic views from a lookout point, visit a wild tortoise colony, and look for other endangered animals in the swaying taro fields before the half-day expedition finishes with drop-off back at your hotel.

Great excursion

It was great to get the history of the area from an expert who was telling great stories but was also able to answer detailed questions. It was a great mix of excursion and enjoying local food!

Amazing fun and engaging tour

A unique tour with many interesting features. This was a highlight of our vacation. The limestone cave was amazing to see. The only access to the cave is on private tours, no longer unrestricted access. The tortoises were fun to observe. Chris was our guide....More
