- A H0 contributionsRottnestHard to fault Rotto. If you’ve been before you know what you’re getting… peace and quiet and an opportunity to explore. Great beaches. Lovely food for lunch at the Rottnest Hotel. Sensible pricing for the ferry and bike hire. And everyone so friendly. And quokkas!!Written January 13, 2025

In summer there are flies though but it was manageable. Its great to spend full day overall we all loved it,better to rent bicycle before going as all bicycles will be rented out.Written January 10, 2025
- Andrew F0 contributionsPoor customer service. Employees act like they’re doing the customer a favor.Ugh. We went to the office trailer in person. We had to cancel our Wednesday trip due to personal circumstances, which we did online a few days before the original date At the trailer the employee said they would give us a voucher for Thursday, “ no problem”. So they then gave a voucher for Wednesday not Thursday, which is what we requested ( we didn't notice their error)The interesting thing is they gave is voucher for the Wednesday 9:30 am departure (we were at there office trailer on Wednesday after 9:30). So we show up, Thursday morning for the 9:30 am ferry, we board and arrive without issue. When it was time to depart rottenest, the employee taking tickets refused our entry on to the boat, acknowledging the error made by his associate told us we could wait and be “ stand by”. So I said to him “ an employee of the company made an error and we have to pay the consequences” his response was “ yes” We refused and eventually boarded the ferry. The boat is fine , but customer service is extremely poor. The employees act like their doing tbe customer a favor. There are other optionsWritten January 9, 2025
- Tissa0100 contributionsSmooth sailing to RottnestWe did a return from Perth, including bike rental. The ferry was on time, information given was very clear and generally the ride was very smooth. They even were on the lookout for dolphins in Swan river. The bikes provided were decent, although the saddle on one of them was a bit loose. Locks and helmets are also provided.Written January 6, 2025
- Jameshunter730 contributionsBetter when not mobbedGreat spot but was so busy . Guess I’d give a better score if I’d gone a bit off season. Shops bars etc couldn’t keep up with the influx of tourists, and you could feel the stress in the form of poor service and poor food. Didn’t matter as to where you went “just couldn’t get service. Boat ride was great as well as the speed boat around the island it’s self and worth the trip for this alone.Written January 2, 2025
- Florence67890 contributionsA great day trip from PerthPros: Easy booking and seamless logistics. It was nice to purchase the full package of ferry/bike/snorkel in one go for a decent price. Rottnest is also full of beautiful scenery, and of course, cute Quokkas. Cons: Most of the cons have more to do with the island itself, rather than the Rottnest Express. E.g., hot sun, high UV, and little shade in some parts of the island. We were also constantly harassed by swarms of little annoying flies. We were additionally not particularly impressed with the snorkelling, as much of the landscape seemed over touristed and over impacted. Lastly, the distances on the island to bike sometimes felt like a slog with the hot weather and many little hills. Bottom line: a great day trip while in Perth, but if you're going in summer, bring the sunscreen, bug spray, and prepare to sweat! :)Written December 31, 2024
- Linda M0 contributionsQuokka are amazing!Really enjoyable and an activity not to be missed. The trip included sailing down to river before travelling the ocean. - A674OYjamesp0 contributionsGreat day out. Bikes are slightly tiredThe day out was great. Busy time of year and a busy ferry but we managed to squeeze in the one an hour before our booking which gave us an extra hour on Rotto. Slightly marred by the fact that the bikes are very tired and I had a flat tyre before starting, swapped it for another bike and then got a puncture 75% of the way round. All sorted by Rottnest Express within 30 minutes but suspect the tyre was in need of replacing before I started!Written December 14, 2024
- 619jeffry0 contributionsRottnest Island is fun for familiesRottnest Island is a fun place for families who take the ferry from Perth for the trip across the ocean. In Rottnest Island, you can swim or take a bicycle around the island. The quokkas, which are like mini kangaroos, can be found around the island. Visitors can take the ferry back to Perth or find somewhere to stay overnight. Things like the pub or the baker keep the visitors interested, or by cycling out to the lighthouse.Written December 14, 2024

Weekday outside school holidays and very busy. Windy day so the trip was a bit rough though not too bad. Friendly crew and bar/snack bar on board.Written December 8, 2024

It was my husband's and I first visit to Rottnest Island from Perth and we thoroughly enjoyed the ferry and bus tour around the island. It included the Swan River and a great descriptive of different icons. It was very informative and the scenery was beautiful. The island bus tour was also fantastic, very informative and great stops long the way. We were very disappointed with the lunch which was included in our ticket price (two people $403.70 AUD). The lunch was provided by Karma Hotel and was a buffet style lunch which we were scheduled for 1.00pm and we arrived at 1.10pm. Upon our arrival there were lunch trays that were empty and the food was very limited. I would not recommend the lunch as there are many different dining places on the island and therefore the all inclusive lunch is a waste of money. I would definitely do the tour again and not the lunch.

Hi CMC2628,
Thank you for your review.
It's a shame to hear that you did not enjoy your lunch at Karma Lodge. We endeavour for our guests to enjoy every minute of their day on the island, so we will pass on your feedback to the Karma staff in the effort that future guests do not experience the same.
Great to hear however, that you did enjoy your ferry and tour services! Hopefully, we will be able to welcome you back to the island again soon for another memorable day.
Kind Regards,
Lydia

I wanted to do a day trip to Rottnest and chose to do the transfer with Rottnest Express. As I booked quite late (Friday for Saturday) no more bikes were available to rent on the ferry from Perth so I called customer service to enquire about alternatives. They were flexible enough to bring me a bike on a ferry arriving one hour later, which was fine for me as I wanted to have breakfast on the island anyway. I could have rented a bike from the local bike shop on Rottnest but I've read somewhere that Rottnest Express's bikes are better.
For ferry rides from Perth they offer a pick up and drop off from CBD hotels, which I booked and which was on time and well organised. For the first part of the ferry ride to Fremantle we got a lot of interesting information on the ferry from a guide, so I got more than expected, and a free coffe or tea. On the return ferry there was free wine and beer tasting as well as live music between Fremantle and Perth. I expected a ferry transfer so all the additional extras were a nice touch.
The only thing I'd improve is the availability by phone at times. The street, where I was supposed to be picked up, was unexpectedly closed and I had to wait for 30 mins in the queue until I could speak to someone and get anoter pickup point. If I hadn't seen the closure from my hotel window in time I'd probably missed my transfer.

Hi Djarmila1978,
Thank you for your review.
It's great to hear our staff were able to accommodate you with a bike on your trip. Cycling definitely is the most popular way to explore the island. For those that5 are not avid cyclists, the island does also offer a hop on hop off bus, in which tickets can be purchased from the Visitor's Centre.
We do try our best to have as many staff available on the phones as possible, and we do apologise for any delays in phone waiting times. Before 9 am, we have three terminals all serving for morning departures, and therefore staff are required to assist passengers at the counter to ensure each ferry departs on time.
Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Kind Regards,
Lydia

Ended up being my favourite part of my trip to Perth! Also hired a bike to get around the island through this company, which ended up being a very wise investment, as there is no way one can walk around the entire island in the time allotted (arrived around 11am and departed at 5pm). Only criticism is that the bike seat was quite uncomfortable, but otherwise no issues.
I paid extra for a guided bus tour and was very impressed with the guide's sense of humour and knowledge about the island. Would definitely recommend this bus tour, especially for first time visitors, as you get a tour around the entire island and a brief stop at Cape Vlamingh (the furthest point on the island).
While I spotted plenty of quokkas around the island, the best place to find one is around the main settlement, especially near the cafe, but please don't feed them!! It really disappointed me how I had to tell a lady off for feeding one ice cream. There's plenty of options at the main settlement for food, including a general store and a Subway, as well as some clothing stores.

As you can see from all my prior reviews i am very fair when it comes to a review, but just felt a bit let down by this experience, we went with the rottnest express company. We knew it was peak season and so booked an early morning experience on a weekday .Our shuttle bus was good, from the hotel to the quay on time, the ferry left on time and by the time we left Fremantle it was chock a block with people having to stand. I actually gave up my seat for an older lady. We got to rottie on time and there was a huge queue to the ladies toilets . We then got to our shuttle bus for the discovery tour and it was so disorganised, took staff 20 minutes to sort out who was on what bus , once again these buses were packed. The tour was good, then we had lunch at Thompsons, was supposed to be a buffet lunch but we had a choice of 2 mains, entrees and deserts. Not good enough. The trip home left on time but so many people pushed in onto the waiting line, those who had lined up for an hour were gazumped by people pushing in , no staff anywhere in sight to deal with this. I feel for $200 a person this tour was very underwhelming and a disappointment to us both . Would not go again .

Hi jim d,
Thank you for providing valuable feedback regarding your experience with Rottnest Express.
We do sympathise that this time of year being peak season, our services, including tours, are often sold out, and therefore we do apologise for any discomfort you may have experienced due to the ferry and tours being at full capacity. We also thank you for your consideration in giving up your seat for another passenger in need during the crossing.
Unfortunately there may have been some misunderstanding when you booked your lunch. Thomson's Restaurant do not offer a buffet lunch, but instead offer a choice between meals on a set menu. If you wish to book a buffet lunch on the island, this is offered by the Karma Resort.
I will be sure to pass on your feedback to our operations department regarding the disorganisation of the bus tours, and the boarding line on the main jetty.
Hopefully we can welcome you back soon for a more enjoyable day in low season, when the island is much quieter.
Kind Regards,
Lydia

We did this “Discover Rottnest with Ferry and bus” activity which was called a “tour” but in reality ended up just some individual tickets that we could have as well purchased separately. So that was a pretty misleading description to begin with and the tour was just a mass produced ferry product. You then got told to make your way to a bus stop on the other side of the settlement were you got squeezed with complete strangers (many of whom bought the ticket at a booth just prior) onto a sightseeing bus and the boarding alone was total chaos. It was all a total mess with sneezing and coughing tourists from Australia and overseas and surely, 4 days later I was down with Covid. Not the operators fault per se but had we known that this will just be a public sightseeing bus crammed up to the rafters with people, we would certainly not have booked it.
The narration on the bus tour itself was at least quite interesting and the natural beauty of the Island is just stunning. The narration on the initial cruise down the Swan River though was dead boring, simply because there’s really nothing of interest to talk about.
After the tour, we were dropped in the island “settlement” for over three hours in order to spend money. We went to the one pub and had some okay but overpriced lunch there but for boarding in the evening, a long queue of ferry guests was already waiting impatiently because everyone was dead bored and spent way too much time on this island. We had to be at the Ferry station in Perth early in the morning and due to all the inefficiencies and chaotic bus boarding process and then the unnecessary long stay, it really took the whole day. But much easier and more comfortably, this could have been a 4 hour afternoon tour instead. And especially the way back on the Swan river: This ferry adheres to the painfully low speed limits on the river while pretty much any other boat or water bike passed us at double the speed. So you crawl reeeeeeally mind numbingly slowly.
Finally, a word on the famous quockas: Yes, you will see them. The ones near the settlement are very easy to approach but they all look sick and rugged due to all the human food they’re eating while feeding them is to be avoided according to numerous signs all over the Island. And the wild ones away from the settlement are much shyer than the tourist ads would make you believe. Taking the famous selfies is certainly not easy and I bet in most cases people use food to attract the little ones which is a total no no according to the signs. Likewise, this rule seems not to apply to toddlers as all over the Island we’ve seen young kids feeding those animals with the parents just looking over it and not doing anything. Seems you can put up as many “No feeding” signs as you want, some idiots still don’t care.

Well worth a visit and plenty to see. The commentary on the swan river was great and the 90 minute bus tour was also very informative and provided a great insight into the island. We walked to Pinky beach resort which was lovely! The views are amazing. Don’t worry plenty of quokka to see!
We had booked lunch as part of the package which certainly was not value for money. We found our whole experience of the Karma resort very disappointing from start to finish. We were lost and asked a member of staff at the mall for directions on how to get into the resort only to be told he was in a hurry as his lunch was getting cold! We followed him as we guessed he was heading back in that direction and he did point out where to find reception.
Once seated it was explained that we were to pick one course from the menu, there seemed to be a wide selection to choose from but I was disappointed on what we were getting for the cost. Service wasn’t the best particularly when my partner was given a water in a dirty glass. We are in a pandemic! The food wasn’t the greatest! The fillet steak had more grizzle than meat! We ordered a bottle of wine and were served with a different brand! We did not notice until we were one glass down. When I challenged it I was told that it was probably due to the one we ordered not being available. We were not made aware this!!! I grudgingly paid the extra $26.
There are plenty of other places to grab lunch. The bakery i believe is highly recommended!

On the 28 February I travelled to Rottnest using the Rottnest Ferry. The outgoing trip was pleasant with people complying with COVID safe practices and with the COVID safe app clearly visible and available for scanning on boarding. On our return trip at 7:30 pm there was no obvious Covid Safe scaning check in and many people on the boat were not wearing masks. There was no room for social distancing and although the public address system told people that they were to check in and wear masks this was largely ignored by most passengers. On looking for a place to check in on the boat I was directed to a tiny QR code sticker stuck to the internal side of the boat. Not something I would have noticed if I were not looking for it. At no time did any of the staff show any interest in trying to get the passengers to comply with COVID safe practices on the return trip. I did send a message to Rottnest Express on messenger as I would rather not have put this on a public forum but I have received no response from my message.

Ferry service to and from Rottnest with a guided bus tour, and some time to spare.
When we arrived we walked around and found a beach to swim. Recommend Pinky Bay as there’s also facilities to get short and get changed
We also paid for the lunch - this was decent enough with a selection from a separate menu for those with the voucher. This came with a drink and dessert of the day before heading for the guided tour bus nearby.
The guided bus tour was really interesting though you’ll be on the bus for the most part other than a quick walk/toilet break. Well worth it though just to see the whole island rather than doing it on bike.
You end the bus tour with some time to spare (hour and a bit) before catching ferry back to mainland.
Really great day trip. Highly recommend
Note: don’t think you’re smart gettting early on the ferry and sitting outside on the ferry service - the waves are choppy and you’ll very likely get sea sprayed

Without advance reservations, I walked to the Barrack Street docks in Perth the morning I wanted to visit and bought my ticket on the spot. I had to choose a later bus tour because those who bought advance tickets filled up the early tour. No big deal, gave me time to wander on my own and have lunch. Clearly marked signage so you knew where to be to return on the ferry.

Thanks for the feedback. We're glad to hear that you were able to get across to the enjoy the bus tour on Rottnest. It does give a good overview of the island in a 90 minute window.
We hope to see you next visit.

Travelled across to Rottnest Island via the Rottnest Express.
We booked for the 90 minute trip around the Island, the guide gave a good overview of the history and the Quokkas.
Lunch was Barramundi and salad (our choice) at the Karma Resturant which was satisfying.
We then searched for the Quakkas, found many and took many photos.
Overall it was an amazing day.

Hi ausboy64,
Thank you for your review.
It's great to hear you had such a memorable day on the island. We certainly do our best to ensure every guest has an enjoyable experience.
The last count of Quokkas on the island was over 10,000, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the little critters for an obligatory Quokka selfie! If it is a hot day, be sure to look in the shade or under trees, where they will likely be hiding from the sun. A lot of visitors also don't realise that Quokkas are actually nocturnal, so if you're lucky enough to stay overnight on the island, they will come out in droves once the sun goes down.
Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the island soon.
Kind Regards,
Lydia

It is about a 15 min walk for the Cruise terminal to shed B. 4mins by taxi. The walk is flat and easy.

Hi, am wondering why it is not possible to book for two adults on 29 Jul? Not sure if there's a glitch somewhere, because I tried searching for availability for 2 adults 3 months later and the result is still the same - unavailable for 2...

Hi -- I have a cruise ending in Fremantle in December 2021 (yes, a long way off). Two questions. The first is I will have luggage. Can this come with me or be stored? The second is I would start your tour in Fremantle but can the return be to Perth?

Hi! This looks like a great tour!
Will we be able to take a selfie with a quokka?
Also, will we have some free time in between?
Thank you!

Hi, Sam. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Hi Did you book this before you travelled or is it easy to book when in Perth. Is there plenty of availability if booking a few days in advance. We are going in November.
Thanks
Sam

really easy to book Sam, go to the terminal a day or two in advance and you can book ferry, bus tour, etc very easily.
