Overview
Explore the waters of Hervey Bay in search of whales on a whale-watching expedition with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Board a vessel with seating options in both sun and shade, then head out to the watery paths where humpback whales do their migration and birth their calves. Listen to commentary and interpretations from certified Marine Naturalists and listen to whale communications on an underwater hydrophone.
What to Expect
Sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings as you depart on your approximately 3 hour adventure from Great Sandy Straits Marina out into the waters of Hervey Bay in search of the humpback whales that migrate here every year.  You'll have a water-level "whale's eye" view of all the action, from mothers interacting with calves to competition pods of males competing for females.  You can witness a multitude of behaviors throughout your excursion (breaches, tail and pectoral slaps, etc.). Each excursion is a new adventure as you never what you'll see.  But there are certified Marine Naturalist onboard to provide expert commentary and interpretation of the various behaviors being exhibited, as well as a whale Researchewr gathering important sightings data for use in ongoing research.

Informative and eco friendly

The crew of the ocean defender knows a lot about the whales. They keep their distance and try to encourage everyone to "be green". We saw 3 mothers with calves. These are wild animals...so you will never know what you are about to see.

Great trip with The Pacific Whale Foundation

We had an awesome time on the whale tour. We saw at least 10 humpbacks up close. The captain and guides were really knowledgeable and informative. Would highly recommend.

Went on afternoon whale watching tour. Was very impressed with the service and the tour. It is a smaller speed boat with full visibility in all directions. Very comfortable and personal trip with a much smaller group of people. The guides are very passionate about...More

Great way to see the whales

We chose Ultimate Whale Watching Cruise for a few reasons. The main reason being that money raised from this experience goes towards the foundation and contributes to research. The boat was also smaller giving a close up encounter and the trip was only for 3...More
