Observing New Zealand fur seals in the wild while you swim is an experience you won’t soon forget. With a short boat-ride offshore from the Kaikoura Peninsula you’ll soon be immersed in their natural habitat. No experience is necessary—just don a wetsuit and snorkel and receive instruction from your guides.
What to Expect
Your experience will begin at the main meeting base at your chosen time, where you will be introduced to your guides and suited up in wetsuits and snorkeling equipment.

You will then be taken on a 10-15-minute bus trip, followed by a 5-15-minute boat trip to one of our favorite seal swimming areas and then spend about one hour in the water. During that time the seals are free to come and go as they please.

It’s very much a wildlife encounter in that we have never feed, or enticed the seals in any way and we do not have any special tricks to make them respond to you in the water. However, due to their natural curiosity you can reasonably expect interactions within 2-3m in the water at different times.

If the seals do not respond, you will get the chance to go again free of charge or be refunded back to the viewing rate of 50% of the swimming rate. We offer a 96% success rate of swimming with the seals on our tours. Hot showers are provided after the tour.

Fantastic wildlife encounter (although we weren't so lucky)

We had a great time with Seal Swim Kaikoura, especially because of the lovely staff and the brand new equipment (we loved the wetsuits, so warm even in freezing cold water!). Unfortunately, the seals weren't really curious on the day we went, but knowing that...More

Seals rock!

I must say, I really love seals! When I went on this tour we had several seals relaxing in the water next to us, rolling around and scratching themselves... so cute! They also did this funny thing where they would float with their heads down...More

Perfect day with the seals

I highly recommend to swim with seals at least once in life and if you have the chance to be in NZ, this company/family is just incredible! They took good care of us the whole time and also explained everything about the seals :)

Really nice experience. Small groups, family run. You get about 1 hour swim time. Some of the seals were quite playful and interested, others were not. I was worried about the water temperature - after getting in I hyperventilated for a couple minutes due to...More

Hi there, the tour doesn't operate in winter due to the cold weather. Tours are usually up and running Oct/Sept but with limited departures. When we went in December - it wasn't a hot sunny day, which limited the seal... More
