Begin the morning with a city sights tour taking in Dunedin City's best attractions. Visit the University of Otago, check out Signal Hill lookout and have a go at walking Baldwin Street, the world's steepest street. Visit the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin's oldest, where you will find the Larnach family tomb. The tour will also stop in the city's Octagon and the Grand Railway Station for a look inside. You will be provided with complimentary snacks and bottled water to keep you refreshed throughout the day.
A key difference with this tour is the small group size (maximum 10 people). This allows us to navigate the Castle with ease, keeping away from the larger groups and fitting much more into the day.
New Zealand's infamous castle was built over a century ago by William Larnach high up on the hills of the Otago Peninsula. Experience breath-taking views along the Peninsula's high road with photo stops en-route to the Castle. Upon arrival it will be time for a light lunch in the Ballroom Cafe (at own cost). We reserve a table for our group and a variety of food is available at good prices.
After lunch, your guide will escort you throughout the entire castle, from the gun room below to the views from the turret and all the marvels in between. Get all the details as you explore the Larnach family’s legacy and hear the tale of their amazing story.
The Castle's award winning garden is one of national and international significance and there will be an opportunity to explore this as well. On a clear day you might even see your cruise ship in dock at Port Chalmers across the harbour.
Depart the castle for a leisurely drive back to Port Chalmers to finish the tour. Arriving back at the wharf Visitor Terminal at least one hour prior to ship's departure.
