Highlights
Combine a Maori cultural performance and hangi dinner
Tamaki Maori Village is located close to central Rotorua
Learn indigenous New Zealand customs, including a welcome ceremony
Convenient coach transport direct from your hotel
What to expect
After hotel pickup or a central meeting point, travel by air-conditioned coach to Tamaki Maori Village, situated deep within the forest near Rotorua. En route, your guide prepares you with information in anticipation of an authentic Maori hangi dinner, and shares protocol for visiting your indigenous hosts at the marae. Hear an eerie cry of welcome before you enter, and experience the powhiri (welcome ceremony) by a proud descendent of New Zealand’s ancient warriors. Pass crackling open fires and traditional whare (houses), and listen to classic instruments as you observe a re-enactment of daily activities and traditional arts and crafts typical of a pre-European Maori village.  In the wharenui (meeting house), see haka song and dance in a powerful performance by a Rangiatea cultural group. When it’s time for the hangi feast, dig into slow-cooked meat and vegetables roasted in underground earthen ovens.  Your tour ends drop-off back at your original departure point.

Your journey through time unfolds when your coach travels to a pre-European village set deep within the forest, 15 minutes from Rotorua. Let this 3.5-hour tour and your imagination take over as your guide instructs you on the protocol for visiting the marae. A chief is selected, a song is learnt and the eerie cry of the welcome is heard before you enter the world of the proud warriors of the ancient Maori. You will experience the powhiri (welcome ceremony) before you enter the village, with crackling open fires in front of traditional whare (houses). You'll hear traditional Maori instruments and watch the daily activities of days gone by. In the wharenui (meeting house), a Rangiatea culture group offers a powerful display of haka song and dance. Then, as new friendships are forged, dine on a traditional hangi feast, where the food is cooked slowly beneath the ground in earth ovens. This is an amazing re-enactment based on actual events from history, with real characters, traditional arts and crafts, powerful song and dance while enjoying an authentic Hangi feast.

The most wonderful experience in NZ
Jan 2020
As a tourist you show up and you're excited and nervous about meeting people from different backgrounds, and when you're a guest in a traditional Maori setting, it is even more special to learn directly from the Indigenous families themselves. It was so much fun as well as educational, including the traditional welcome, the haka, the different types of technologies, and the super delicious dinner. Even though I know what to expect the next time I go, I for sure would want to go back at a different time of year to see the difference in fall for example.

Entertaining and Educational for every age!
Feb 2020
What an evening! I loved every aspect of the tour and dinner. Our even started out with a short video and boarding of buses that took us on a 20 minute ride to the Tamaki Village. We had a very entertaining bus driver, A+! We were greeted by the Maori people who showed/taught cultural performances and rituals. They walked us through their village teaching us about different aspects of their cultures and traditions (we even got to interact and join in!). They sang us songs and taught us dances, and after all of the exploring we ate a hangi dinner! It was truly a feast, and so neat to see their process of cooking and preparing. The whole experience was entertaining and educational. I encourage any age to go!

Fun for all from 3 to 91 years old
Jul 2020
We went with a group of ten people for a cultural experience and dinner. Excellent hospitality from wonderful people. We were collected by bus from our hotel, welcomed into the sacred village, learned about the village life, were entertained by the concert party, and fed an excellent traditional hangi feast.

Our bus driver, Dennis kept us entertained on the way to the village and back to the hotel. Everyone who attended (from 3 years old to 91 years old) had a fun time.

Thanks Tamaki Village for a good time.

The interaction with the people, taking you back in time, so moving. The performance was very powerful, amazing voices, gave me goosebumps, it was very noticeable the performers loved what they do and it sure came through on stage . The hangi dinner, where do I begin? It was so filling cooked beautifully and the glass of complimentary wine was a nice touch.
The entertainment and formative talk by our friendly bus driver Dennis made the journey so funny and it seemed like we only travelled down the road.
Would throughly recommend Tamaki Tours.

The best ticketed experience we've ever done.
Nov 2019
Absolutely loved everything about this experience. From the educational aspects learning about the Maori culture and history to the excellent performances and games throughout.

The Maori staff are incredible and the real jewel of this attraction. Our bus driver, Davey, was an absolute star even before we got to the village.

I was lucky enough to be chosen as a 'chief' for the night. Wow. What an experience. The highlight being having the Haka performed by the warriors only a few feet from me, spine tingling and, in a strange way, humbling to accept the peace offering on behalf of my 'tribe' for the night.

After the Haka, the staff become incredibly laid back and hilarious throughout. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough. It is one we will go out of our way to do again if we visit NZ in the future. I still wear the fishhook necklace from the gift shop everyday as a reminder.

Waste of money
Jan 2020
The service was quite crappy and I wonder what else. Show was terrible and nothing to learn/gain. Rude staff. My group had 4 children, by fast the largest children group consisting smallest kids but we were the last to be invited for dinner. I will refrain from mentioning the distinguishing feature that might have led to a pathetic discriminatory treatment for us. Never again place. Avoid at all costs.

Kia ora, Thank you for leaving your review. We're a little surprised you have rated us so low and did not learn/gain anything from your experience as we're the most award winning cultural experience in New Zealand and well-known for our authenticity. I have shared the comments with our team regarding being last to be invited for dinner with your children, this is something we can definitely be more aware of & improve on in future. Nga mihi nui,

I took my son and his family to this show and dinner, I was moved to tears as was my son with the beautifully sung Maori songs. This was very interesting hearing and participating in the ways of the Maori people, we learned so much. I felt humbled at watching how these beautiful people live caring for thier world nature and the universe, we can learn so much from thier ways. The dinner was scrumptous, I ate too much as it really was tasty. We had a lot of fun on the bus with the lead person, he has great sense of humour and had us singing, what fun. Great experience for all ages and jolly good value.
