What to expect
Don't miss an opportunity to visit Tiritiri Matangi island, where numbers of visitors are limited in order to protect the island’s wildlife. Ride a 75-minute ferry from Auckland across the Hauraki Gulf to Tiritiri Matangi, a predator-free open sanctuary that’s home to many endangered native birds found in New Zealand.  You’ll have about five hours total on the island. First, listen to a ranger discuss environmental recovery efforts since 1984, which have helped re-establish 12 endangered native bird species and 3 reptile species, including the rare tuatara (a prehistoric lizard).  Opt for an in-depth island tour to learn about resident birds and other wildlife. During the 1.5-hour walk, a guide teaches you to identify various birdcalls. Finish the tour at the visitor center where you can browse through informative exhibits while sipping complimentary tea and coffee. Alternatively, spend your time exploring the island’s walking trails on your own. Perhaps stop by the lighthouse and, in warmer months, head to Hobbs beach for a swim before the ferry ride back to Auckland.

A magic day
Mar 2021
A family day trip with primary school children exceeded expectations. Adults and children alike were enchanted with the environment and the whole day. We opted for the guided tour and had 2 volunteer guides for our group. Pam and Jacqui were extraordinary. Their knowledge and passion for the island, their pride in its transformation from barren farm land to NZ predator free native bush, and identification of the birds, plants and wildlife in general was exemplary. Most noted was how they managed to engage the children.
The biggest challenge was muting happy chatter to fully appreciate the bird chorus.
The visitor centre is worth a linger, and self serve tea and coffee a welcome addition to our bottled water.

Amazing Experience
Jan 2021
Great day with sighting of many birds. I strongly recommend paying the $10 for a guide (the money goes directly for supporting the work of the volunteers). Tony, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the island and the birds and animals on it.

Excellent Trip
Feb 2020
A very enjoyable day out starting with the ferry trip followed by a guided walk led by a very knowledgeable volunteer guide, whom I discovered was born in the UK a few miles from where I was. The island is highly protected and is home to a number of scarce native New Zealand birds which we saw and heard.

birds galore
Mar 2020
Tiritiri Matangi is a triumph of volunteer/conservation cooperation. Rare birds like the fabulous Saddleback are easy to spot, Hihi (Stichbird), Tui and Bellbird swarm around feeding station. And even the highly endangered Kokako can be spotted skipping across the forest canopy.

If you are at all interested in birds and conservation, this is a must. It's the New Zealand bush and birdlife the way it used to be 200 years ago. Put simply, it's a delight.

Worth every cent and more!
This trip was amazing in every way. A truly beautiful island where you are surrounded by some of NZs rarest birds. The real magic is the guides though. Fabulous people with a real love of what they do. If you are on the fence - book it! I will definitely be going back.

Great Day Out
Jan 2020 • Friends
This is an excellent trip. We were very impresssed with the organisation, knowledge and enthusiasm of and by the volunteers. It was a busy day but this did not detract from the experience. However, I feel grateful to live locally as I will go back again in a different season. Even a rainy day would be interesting!

Heaven w/ an amazing guide!
We took the ferry out to Tiritiri Matangi from Auckland. The ferry ride was lovely and there was coffee and snacks avail we for purchase which was helpful given the earlier departure. There were a good amount of guides and the groups were kept small. There were seven people in our group. It was lots of fun. The tour we did was a bit longer and had some steeper climbs, but was not hard for an average walker/hiker. We were lucky to see a large number of birds on our walk. There was a kororā (little penguin) in one of the boxes built to house them. There was also tui, sacred kingfisher, oystercatcher, ruru, hihi, and a favorite of many the takahē. We spent a good two hours on the guided walk and then had a lunch that we brought with us near the lighthouse. We had some time to explore after lunch and take a few photos and check out the store. Make sure to pack lunch that is easy to pack in and pack out. The island doesn’t have anywhere to throw away trash. This is a brilliant island!!

Whilst it was a good day out, we were a little underwhelmed by the amount of birds around given the reviews we’d read ahead of the visit. Our guide was also average but appreciate they’re volunteers,
