Overview
Explore the volcanic terrain of Rangitoto Island aboard a 4WD tractor-pulled tram on this half-day guided tour. Depart Auckland for Rangitoto on a ferry ride across the Hauraki Gulf, and be rewarded with 360-degree views of the water and city skyline after a short walk to the island’s summit. During your 2-hour off-road adventure, hear commentary about the island’s history, geology and rich plant life, including the largest preserved pohutukawa forest in the world.
What to Expect
Take in the spectacular lava fields and natural beauty of Rangitoto Island, starting with a 25-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. On arrival, hop into a 4WD tractor-pulled tram for a guided 2-hour tour of the volcanic island.

As you traverse rugged lava fields, an informative guide narrates Rangitoto’s volcanic origins and geology. Discover the island’s thriving plant life — around 200 species of moss, plants and trees, including the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.

Upon reaching the base of the summit, it’s a moderate half-mile (.8-km) walk along a wooden boardwalk to reach the top, where you’re rewarded with a panorama of the Auckland skyline and the Hauraki Gulf.

Afterward, rejoin the tram to explore the island’s western side, passing modest 1920s beach homes called bachs, and possibly glimpsing obsolete ships left to decay on the island’s hidden shores. Your tour ends with a return ferry ride to Auckland.

A really hot day and took the short boat to Rangitoto, Auckland via Devonport. The tractor train drive was enhanced by the excellent driver commentary. The walk to the summit may be relatively close but on a really hot day was quite a trek up...More

Nice 1/2 Day Trip from Auckland

This is a fun trip to see the lava fields and to climb the 400 stairs to the volcano summit. The 4WD tram ride is quite interesting, lots of information about the island’s history and nature. Many nice photo opportunities.

I really enjoyed the tour, the guide was informative and funny, without bombarding us with information. I felt I learned a lot about the Island which would not be possible if I walked to the top alone. The views at the top and along the...More
