- AnnaR14610 contributionsA must do trip!Anyone heading to Perth should definitely check out Rottnest Island. It is absolutely beautiful. We went snorkelling at little salmon bay which was stunning! Some of the beaches are very quiet and perfect to spend some time on with your travelling group. We saw lots of quokkas. The best place to see them is by the main arrival and departure area. The ferry staff were great and friendly too! It takes about 90 minutes to get across on the ferry but it’s a pretty ride. The staff talk you through what is around which is interesting.Written March 3, 2025

- 619jeffry0 contributionsRottnest is popular tourism destinationRottnest is a favorite island of mine since we took a ferry there. The trip from Fremantle is around 20 km (just over 12 miles). It's one of Western Australia's major and best-known tourism destinations. The island is surrounded by over 60 beaches. There are many activities that entertain visitors, including snorkeling in secret lagoons and renting a bike to cycle around the salt lakes. Checking out the wildlife is entertaining, including the famous quokkas, which are like mini kangaroos. One of the most notable events for Rottnest is the race from Fremantle to the island, which attracts 2,000 swimmers. Just how long you want to stay is up to you, but the trip to Rottnest is popular by ferry.Written February 15, 2025

We hired our bikes directly from SeaLink rather than on the island and were very happy with the quality. The locks, brakes, helmet and gears all worked fine and appeared to be of consistent quality as opposed to some we saw from the other companies. Only wish we could have hired a basket and flipper and snorkel set directly through SeaLink too - we ended up still lining up at Pedal & Flipper for these. Enjoyed the commentary on the Ferry ride, sitting up top was pleasant and we spotted a couple of river dolphins on the way back! The staff were all friendly and helpful. Overall, I'd still book SeaLink again but probably take my own snorkel set & basket next time if not available through them directly. Thanks for a great trip! :)

The 1 1/2 hour journey to Rotto from Perth seemed to go by quickly. Comfortable seats on the ferry and interesting commentary from the captain made the trip enjoyable. Collecting the bikes was quick and efficient. Be aware, there were no baskets on the bikes, so take a knapsack if you plan to carry items. They do provide helmets and bike locks. The bikes are sturdy and have gear shifts for those occasional uphills. Very nice way to see the island. The trip back to Perth departed on time. Glad we booked this experience!

Great island. We had chosen the ferry from Perth now, because you will also take part of the Swan River. However, that part was very disappointing. It takes an hour to get to the sea and you mainly see villas and part of the harbour. The bikes from Sealink were very good and highly recommended for when you want to cycle around the whole island. Snorkeling at Salmon bay was an absolute highlight.

To be completely honest I didn't really enjoy the day. We queued to get on board and I had downloaded the ticket as per instruction. Once ready to board it then turned out I needed the barcode from the original email instead of the ticket . As I couldn't get it on my phone due to not having WiFi I had to run back to the ticket office so that they could print it off for me. It was all quite stressful and I could have been asked when I checked in at the booking office if I had the barcode. I had previously enquired whether the company were offering passenger pick up in Fremantle. They said they weren't which is fair enough but I would have appreciated being told that we could get on the boat there rather than travelling to Elizabeth quay. We boarded and then stopped at Fremantle to change boats. It had something to do with the high tides and our tickets did provide us with travel from the city centre, which is perhaps why it wasn't mentioned. I was starting to feel a bit seasick by this time so really wanted as short a crossing as possible and it wouldn't have mattered to me if the river part of the journey was cut short. We finally arrived on the island and were allocated bikes, locks and helmets. They were good bikes though had no racks, bottle carriers or phone holders . Obviously this has nothing to do with the day's trip and the ferry but I found the island completely overcrowded and commercial. Such a shame as I expected it to be beautiful but quiet. We did manage to spot quite a bit of wildlife but this was well away from the main settlement. It seems many people catch the ferry over and then just crowd onto the nearest beach. I won't be in a hurry to go back.

Thank you for providing such honest feedback. We are so sorry to hear that you found the experience so disappointing.
There have been several days recently where there has been an unusually high tide in the Swan River, which has meant that customers have had to change vessels in Fremantle. This doesn't happen very often and of course is completely out of our control, but we are sorry that it happened on a day that you were travelling with us.
Bike hire is the best way to explore the island at your own pace and we are looking to add on baskets, water bottle holders etc for next season, so thank you for providing us with this feedback.
Rottnest can get a little busy in the popular summer months - hopefully we might see you back one day at a less busy time, as the island can be a very different experience in the quieter months.
Thank you again for your feedback, we do appreciate it.
Kind regards,
Kat from SeaLink Rottnest Island

The Sealink ferry is very efficient and the boat was comfortable. We rented bikes from them which made it so easy - we got off the boat and they handed us the bikes. I do wish there was a basket as we brought our own snorkeling gear and had to put it on handle bar which was not so convenient. The bikes were good quality and they gave us helmets.
The biking around the island is great. The beaches are beautiful but the water was frigid (this from an American who loves the Caribbean). A local told us that this was the warmest they get (oh my). As we took the snorkel gear, I made my husband go with me - we only did 1 beach for about 10 minutes and then gave up as it was just too cold for us. It was a beautiful day for biking though.
We wandered around the island to the lighthouse, to various lookouts and really enjoyed the day.

The SeaLink Ferry is for going to and coming from Rottnest Island. If you don't want to book accommodation, the day trip is your best bet. You can ride a bike from one end of the island to the other. The island is small, but not that small, it's 11 km (7 miles) long and 4.5 km (3 miles) at its widest point. Rottnest is a flat island, there are few hills. The salt lakes look solid, but they are not, so don't get caught. Rottnest has a milder climate than the mainland, which makes it pleasant in summer.

We pre-ordered bike hire which made everything so effortless when we arrived at Rottnest. These were the best hire bikes on the island - trust me, we checked out the other options. Also pre-ordered the breakfast pack - most enjoyable and very cost effective. The quiche and croissant were still warm. Yum. Would highly recommend the breakfast.

Ferry trip down Swan River then out to Rottness was very informative with crew providing commentary. Toilets & food/drink available on ferry. Took the 30min bike route, after minor chain failure which was fixed very quickly, was great being able to stop wherever you wanted for photos, swim, toilets & food. Quokka’s out after lunch, many photo opportunities. Great day out!

The package began with car pick-up in front of the hotel. Then followed the catamaran ride from the port in Perth to Rottnest Island, where we saw rental bikes from the ship. The boat tour began gently and slowly with the drive through the Swan River. After Freemantle we went out to sea and the swing in the waves began.

This is my 3rd time to Rottnest and was by far the best crossing. Loved the commentary down the swan before stopping in Fremantle, which was an unexpected surprise! Friendly staff. Easy bike hire package. I’ll definitely use sea link in the future!!
