There were a couple of companies offering the ferry from Freemantle Shed B but we chose the express. Not sure how much you can say about a ferry other than it arrived on time, left pretty much on time and arrived on time. The vessel on the way over was smaller with few facilities and a much smaller outdoor area but the return vessel was larger with a much larger outdoor seating & a snack bar. If this is important to you best check the schedule before travelling. If sitting outdoors, check with the crew whether you are likely to get wet. A couple of people in prime position needed to move inside due to the prevailing winds and rough water, their seats got duly soaked!

We booked this tour through our hotel the Pan Pacific as it is the same cost as booking down at the Jetty, coach transfer was included.
The ferry crossing takes around 90 minutes in a well maintained and modern ferry that has all the required facilities and is spread across 3 decks, there was ample seating and the views are great either below or above deck.
On arriving at the island we headed straight for the bike hire outlet and chose our bikes to suit, electric bikes are also available but were limited due to popularity. If you do have fitness issues i would advise going for the electric ones as the undulations on the island coupled with the heat is quite challenging even to those that consider themselves to be quite fit.I would also highly recommend that you stock up on Water as topping up options are very limited from what we saw, there are plenty of Toilets throughout but they may not be to everyone's liking if your overly fussy.
Do also make sure you get hold of a map as they are really helpful in locating the many places to stop en-route as well as Toilet locations and most importantly so that you don't go too far away from the main village so as not to miss your return ferry crossing as apparently they don't wait for you if your not back on board at the correct time.
From setting out from the village we headed clockwise around the island as recommended so as to have the wind at our backs and this really did make a difference on certain stretches,we stopped off at a couple of beaches for a much needed cool off in the ocean which was surprisingly brisk but refreshing nonetheless,we did also encounter a Snake in the sheltered areas when getting changed so do be careful.
After a couple of hours exploring the wives had done enough pedaling so decided to take the short cut back to the village for a spot of shopping and a relax whilst the 2 of us carried on up to the Lighthouse where there is the opportunity to explore this and also to get drinks and a snack at the van located here.
From the Lighthouse we headed back to the village having not realised that we had missed the turning which reaches further parts of the island, this was not a big issue as i think that we were both ready for a late lunch before heading back to the ferry.
One thing that i would add is that the restaurants and bars in the village were very decent and surprisingly not overpriced as is so often the case in such a limited location,so full praise for this.
The ferry back after such a long exhausting day was also a really nice experience as we had a singer playing some great old tunes on the lower deck, his surname was Murphy and he certainly deserves a chance with his singing and entertainment value somewhere grander than a ferry crossing.
So to sum up,this is a must do if you get the chance,it truly is a real memorable trip.

Hi scaffolder1888, Thank you for your review. Wow, it really sounds like you had a blast of a day! We are so happy that we were able to contribute to some beautiful lasting memories of your holiday. There is bike hire available on the island, however if you are eager to start off on your journey around the island, you can also hire the bikes directly from Rottnest Express, and they are collected from the crew when you disembark the ferry. The singer on the return service to Perth would have been Courtney Murphy, who did in fact have quite a successful run on the popular national television show, Australian Idol. We are honoured and very proud to have him beguile our guests with his talents. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind Regards, Lydia

A fabulous day out. Thank you to our Perth family for the early Christmas present. We spent a fabulous day cruising out to the island but the best treat was the fabulous lunch at Isola Restaurant. It was amazing. We shared a tasting T-Bone steak with a great rocket salad and a nice glass of wine. Would highly recommend you book so you don’t miss out on this gem.
The bus tour around the island is a must on a warm day and you don’t feel like you have time to walk it after a long lunch.
A wonderful time out.

Packed in like sardines. Poster asking us to stay 1.5 metres apart when it is physically impossible. $50 boat ticket and it seems we are asylum seekers jammed on a boat. Seats on the bottom deck is layed out like booth seats at a restaurant which makes space for less people. Brain dead design.

do not buy annual pass $129 for 10 times, you have to pay $19,50 each time landing, which is cost $32.40 each trip, 10 time annual pass is $324.00 not $129. it is misleading. Rottnest express wouldn't offer your refund. I very disappointed it with attitude.

Hi Crawley2021, Unfortunately, the $19.50 lading fee or $25.50 if you are staying for an extended period of time is something that we have no control over. We collect this fee at the time of booking on behalf of the Rottnest Island Authority and it is mandatory that every person who visits the island pays this. I'm sorry that you have found this information to be misleading, however, the fact that the admission fee is payable in addition to your pass is stated in the terms and conditions on our website and the confirmation received upon purchasing your red rider pass.

I would recommend taking the First ferry from Fremantle, as you will arrive at the Island earlier. We took the ferry from Perth and then heads out along the Swan river to Fremantle to pick up more passengers and then onward to the island. If you want to sit back and get the guided tour along the Swan river by all means I would recommend it, it is fun and you get to see very interesting points of interest along the way. If you take the last ferry from Rottnest you will be on the river in the dark which is very cool, you get a great view of Perth.

Ferry fine, Island stunning . We had 6 adults and 3 under 3s in party so thought hop on hop off bus coming every 15 mins would be easier than bicycles. Fine to start with got of at stop 6 Salmon Bay to swim, beautiful safe sandy bay. Walked to lighthouse stop to see more of scenery. Waited there 45 mins for bus, it came, stopped and said it was full. Had to phone info centre and
bus company. Another bus came and
lots of people who came after pushed on before us and then no room for buggies. Eventually bus company sent an extra bus, apparently one bus ran out of petrol☹️ We wanted to see seals but were now running out of time and worried about bus situation in regard of making it back in time for ferry. In the end bus company wasted 1.30 mins of our special time. Over from UK probably only chance to visit. Feel that we paid out over£60 for a totally unreliable service 😡

Hi southamptonaskari, Thank you for your review. In peak season, the hop on hop off bus can be very busy. We often recommend to passengers that cycling is the best way to see the whole island, especially in high peak periods, as the buses can become quite full and availability limited. This service is offered and operated by the Rottnest Island Authority, not Rottnest Express. Hopefully we will be able to welcome you back again in a quieter season, so you can enjoy the beauty of the island without battling the summer crowds. Kind Regards, Lydia

These guys are so well organised. Getting on and off the boat is made easy, even with 5 bikes and 9 pieces of luggage. The boat was clean and facilities good.
Thrill boat ride is well worth the money. Our 6yo came on so it's not too crazy but a good amount of fun with some seal watching too. Yvette and Guy did a great job as tour guides.

We purchases their round-trip ferry upgrade from Perth.

The ferry terminal is located right in the Perth CBD and was easy to walk to from anywhere in the CBD or get to using the free Perth CBD public busses.

After boarding, we met individually with Grace because we had purchased the upgrade and she spent a few minutes helping us plan our day on the island.

Grace provided commentary during the majority of the 1.5 hour ferry trip to Rottnest Island and she was extremely friendly, informative, and funny. Truly enjoyed listening to her stories and anecdotes.

We sat outside under a shade and had an enjoyable trip to Rottnest. It was on-time, had a small bar/cafe on the boat for snacks and breakfast, and had a very pleasant trip. We even saw dolphins!

One of the perks of the upgrade is that we get to skip to the front of the line when boarding the ferry. My husband and I told Grace when we got to Rottnest Island that we didn't feel comfortable doing that. So, she offered to meet us at the beginning of the jetty 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. I am so grateful for that because she walked us to an area under an umbrella right by the entrance to the ferry and we were allowed to wait in the shade. Unfortunately for everyone else, the sun was shining and it was extremely hot and there wasn't any shade on the jetty for the main line.

The upgrade gave us a coupon for a free drink; water, soda, or alcohol, and a small care package. There was live music on the way back to Perth and a small wine/beer tasting from Swan Valley wineries and breweries.

It was an inexpensive and entertaining way to get to Rottnest Island. Highly recommend it.

Hi JBeerman, Thank you for your review. It's great to hear you enjoyed your trip to Rottnest Island, and made great use of the extras offered in your upgrade ticket. This is a new service that we have started offering in the recent Summer, so we're thrilled that you found it an invaluable addition to your day. Grace is a priceless asset to our host team, and we will certainly pass on your compliments. Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the island again soon. Kind Regards, Lydia

From the time we ran into Mal as we were watching swans on the Swan to the return trip, nothing and no amount of requests for information was too much trouble. His commentary as we sailed down the Swan from Perth was extensive. He even serves at the little cafe on the Express and helped with directions when we ran into him on the island. Mal is a great ambassador for Rottnest Express and is keen to let you know what other adventures you can do with the company. The trip down the Swan was informative and extolled Perth, WA, its geography, people and all its wonders.
We watched in Fremantle as the crew efficiently, quickly and carefully loaded passengers, their bikes and baggage. And unloaded with the same efficiency in Rotto.
The only negative was the dried spray on the windows which made it difficult to take photos from inside when we wanted. And not even easy to see through.
A good day, nevertheless.
