      A great day out.
A great day out exploring the island. We didn’t hire bikes but used the hop on hop off bus which was great for us.wish we could have stayed longer.

      Fantastic tour
Eli was a brilliant guide and so knowledgeable. His enthusiasm for the island shone through. The island is absolutely stunning as are the Quokkas. A well balanced tour. Would definitely recommend it to anyone

Eli was a great tour guide. He balanced information with a sense of humour. His passion for Rottnest Island shone through. Especially when we saw young dolphins surfing the ways.

      Great island with a view
Its a great island for cycling or any beach activity. In summer there are flies though but it was manageable. Its great to spend full day overall we all loved it,better to rent bicycle before going as all bicycles will be rented out.

Poor customer service. Employees act like they’re doing the customer a favor.
Ugh. We went to the office trailer in person. We had to cancel our Wednesday trip due to personal circumstances, which we did online a few days before the original date At the trailer the employee said they would give us a voucher for Thursday, “ no problem”. So they then gave a voucher for Wednesday not Thursday, which is what we requested ( we didn't notice their error)The interesting thing is they gave is voucher for the Wednesday 9:30 am departure (we were at there office trailer on Wednesday after 9:30). So we show up, Thursday morning for the 9:30 am ferry, we board and arrive without issue. When it was time to depart rottenest, the employee taking tickets refused our entry on to the boat, acknowledging the error made by his associate told us we could wait and be “ stand by”. So I said to him “ an employee of the company made an error and we have to pay the consequences” his response was “ yes” We refused and eventually boarded the ferry. The boat is fine , but customer service is extremely poor. The employees act like their doing tbe customer a favor. There are other options

      Better when not mobbed
Great spot but was so busy . Guess I’d give a better score if I’d gone a bit off season. Shops bars etc couldn’t keep up with the influx of tourists, and you could feel the stress in the form of poor service and poor food. Didn’t matter as to where you went “just couldn’t get service. Boat ride was great as well as the speed boat around the island it’s self and worth the trip for this alone.

      Great day out
Trip up the Swan River very Informative commentary, trip out to the island very smooth and uneventful. Bus trip around the island was extremely well run and Informative, Cos being the coach captain and Eli providing a running commentary, complete with artwork depicting the local wildlife. Both of them were dedicated and passionate about their job.

      Quokka are amazing!
Really enjoyable and an activity not to be missed. The trip included sailing down to river before travelling the ocean. Good facilities on the island including a choice of coffee shops and gifts. The beaches are beautiful. The activity is as high as you make it.

Amazing!! Loved the boat ride out to Rottnest island, very comfortable ride and enjoyed sitting the outside deck. Then the ent on the fast jet boat ride around the island, that stopped at points of interest! A must do!

      Miss out the bus tour.
Ferry was very pleasant. Quokkas plentiful and as described so cute. Day WOULD have been perfect if we had not booked the relatively expensive bus tour thinking we’d have the full experience. On the contrary it really spoiled our day when we had to board a fairly ramshackle old bus with noisy engine. The poor blond young female guide gave up on trying to use the microphone. As between the constant whine/crackle and roaring from old bus engine meant we couldn’t even get her name. Complete waste of a trip. Island history etc was lost to us. Despite her trying valiantly to stand in middle of bus and shouting as loud as she could we heard very little of it. Rest of facilities were really good and we have no complaints apart from this. Rottnest was well worth a visit would recommend. Just DO NOT book the Rottnest Express bus tour save your money.

      A day on Rottnest
The ferry from Perth to Fremantle was an adventure in itself, great informative commentary. Rottnest is an amazing place, the bus tour was good, the commentary was informative, would have liked a few more stops on it though. A number of pristine and historical locations were spoken about and driven past but the bus didn't stop, so a little disappointing from a photographic perspective.

Rottnest Island is fun for families
Rottnest Island is a fun place for families who take the ferry from Perth for the trip across the ocean. In Rottnest Island, you can swim or take a bicycle around the island. The quokkas, which are like mini kangaroos, can be found around the island. Visitors can take the ferry back to Perth or find somewhere to stay overnight. Things like the pub or the baker keep the visitors interested, or by cycling out to the lighthouse.

We booked on line with Rottnest Express for the ferry ride from Perth to Rottnest Island with Bikes for two adults. We enjoyed the narrated tour over to the island and was impressed with the streamlined operations for bike/safety helmet issue once we disembarked from the ferry. Rottnest roads and maps were great. We easily navigated to explore most of the island. There was food and snacks available in the town center. The bathrooms along the roads were a disappointment from the odor. All in all, we would recommend this ferry tour/bike combination to our friends.

Hi steveandpatty3, Thank you for your review. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your day on the island, and found the boarding and bike collection process easy and seamless. We do our best to ensure efficient distribution of the bikes on the jetty, to avoid any delays and congestion of passengers. As helmets are required by law in Western Australia, all bike hires will come with a helmet. We do recommend wearing these helmets, as failure to do so can attract a fine from the Island Police, and compromise your safety on the roads. Quokkas are a bit like Kangaroos....they can jump out on the path without a moments notice, so protect your noggin! Thank you for travelling with Rottnest Express, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the island soon for another memorable adventure. Kind Regards, Lydia

The boats are new and sturdy. The staff is polite and easy going.
We booked for the 9am ferry with a return at 4pm and on both rides we were allowed to hop on differently timed ferries. If you want to go earlier or later, just check with the staff and if there is space they let you go on other times.
The bikes we hired from them were well maintained and we had no issues at all. Plus you get a helmet in the price. Hire on the island ismore expensive.

We were very lucky to enjoy fine sunny weather given that it was the wettest month of the year. The swells were normal and so our journey could proceed!

The ferry ride was fun, and the staff provided good commentary (but the speakers on the outside deck kept cutting out - please look into this)

On to some small pain points:

The booking process is terrible on smart phones. I initially wanted to book tickets at the sales booth at the pier. But staff suggested I book online to save money. The mobile website is set up in a way where you need to press next at each step of the booking process. But if there is an issue with information on one of the forms, it won't let you proceed to the next step. This is fine except the site doesn't throw up errors or explains this very well. The booth staff had to explain how it works to me (even your own staff agree this is not user friendly on smart phones). It was also ironic as staff could have just as easily put in the booking on their computer themselves, if not for the higher price.

While the journey was scheduled to take 90 minutes from Perth Barack St to Rottnest, I think it took closer to 2 hours as we stopped and took quite a while to load up additional passengers and cargo at Fremantle.

Once we got to Rottnest, it again took a while to get our bikes off the ferry. The staff were getting cargo off the ferry first. I overheard one of the staff saying that the ferry's crane is broken so it was not working at its usual speed. This meant less time for us customers to ride around the island.

My bike was quite rusty, and the bike seat was difficult to adjust due to the rust. The bike tires were also a little low on air. Unfortunately I only realised this after I left the port. Would be better if you refreshed your bike collection.

After a short lunch, we only had about 3 hours of actual riding time on the island, as we had to rush back up to 30 minutes before the ferry departed as explained on our booking. This was to ensure there was time to board and to get a seat on the outside deck. With 3 hours of riding time, we could only explore a small part of the island. If the above issues were fixed, this would have maximised our ride time.

Rottnest was great but I was charged the wrong amount via this site when I booked. They have the child age listed as 3-11 but when I picked up the ticket, the child age is actually 4-12. I contacted this site to ask for a refund in the price difference, and I provided proof of the child age on the ticket but they have not processed my refund or replied to me. Save your money and book directly at the ferry counter.

Ferry over was good with stop at Freemantle, nice commentary, fairly calm but seats very close together in covered area, felt a bit cramped, crew friendly. Rental bikes were very poor, if you are over 50 suggest bus option not bikes. Island fairly flat. Amazed how many people on the island either staying or visiting. Was told some days 4000 bikes. Food options good and reasonable. Plenty of places for picnic or to get away from others. Saw a few quokkas - mainly around food outlets. Return of bikes was poorly organized, not sure of procedure, many just dropped off bikes at jetty and walked away, crew seemed unconcerned. Trip back was long with 2 stops - took 2 hrs. My overall opinion 50/50. I would prob recommend to combine a trip to Freemantle and Rottness Isl together.

We spent a beautiful day on Rottnest Island exploring the island on bikes. I loved the idea of being independent and riding where we chose, stopping where we wanted and not waiting for a bus. Our trip started in Perth with a boat ride to Freemantle where additional passengers got on for the tip across to Rottnest Island. We had such a good day exploring the area and our close encounters with the local quokkas. We saw quite a few during our bike ride. They are very cute and quite inquisitive. Just sit still and they come and check you out. When we stopped for an ice-cream there was one moving round between the people checking out for crumbs and any interesting things to eat. We didn’t feed them but they seem to find crumbs that kept them interested. The weather was perfect 28 degrees and sunny Perfect! The ferry trip was comfortable and beautiful in the evening as we returned to Perth. The night lights were magical. The only disappointing part were the quality and state of the bikes. Very poor. The first one I was given had a faulty seat. I was given another but the gears were in need of attention. Only 2 gears worked. If possible I would recommend to bring your own or try one of the island based bike hire places.

Hi, Thank you for your review and feedback! It sounds like you had the most amazing day over on the island and we can't wait to see you again soon. We sincerely apologise that your hire bike was not up to scratch and caused a few issues, all we can do is encourage you to do exactly as you did and ask for a replacement which are available on the ferry. Our bikes are replaced and repaired regularly to ensure that they are in the best working condition possible despite their regular use and wear and tear. We hope that you still managed to get in a lovely bike ride anyways! Kind regards, The Rottnest Express Sales Team

The island itself is well worth the trip. We left from the Barrack St jetty because we specifically wanted to hear the commentary about the Swan River. Unfortunately the sound quality of the speakers was so bad that I, even as an English speaker could only pick up about every 10th word. Maybe the ferry company could invest in headphones like they have in museums where the commentary could be also offered in different languages. However, the staff on the ferry were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. The bikes could do with a good audit and service. I had to return my first bike as the seat kept on swivelling and then the bike I ended up with only had 2 gears out of 3 which meant I had to get off and walk my bike up several hills. The food at the Rottnest Pub was really good and overall I would recommend this experience.

There are two ferry companies blue is Sealink and red is The Rotness express. both leave from the same quay spot at Fremantle wharf Shed B.(Walking distance from the railway station) Both have ticket offices opposite each other on the grass. There is terminal car parking but it always seemed quite busy and full. The time tables differ slightly but Red runs an hourly service which is easier to cope with. We went on spec bought our tickets for a later ferry as the early one was full but played the standby game. 5 mins before departure if the boat isn't full they take standbys for the next ferry . We did it both ways and were successful both times on a busy friday. Wander off the pier and walk 600 metres diagonally to the left to Pedal and Flipper and hire a bike. Join a small queue and pay. Have a great day. You need water there is none once you have left the settlement of Thompson Bay and it gets very hot. The two litre rule should apply. Quokkas are cute they can be found in the main street. Shops have anti Quocca swing gates! The island has some lovely beaches. A packed lunch helps to make the day. Beware of snakes if you go off the tarmac and board walks. Rocks on beaches can hide them as well. They are little and venomous. It is unlikely you will do the whole island on a hire bike in a day but its a lovely and tiring day out.

The Rottnest Express seems to be one of a small handful of operating ferries between Perth/Fremantle and Rottnest Island. We took the ferry from Perth and it started with a slower boat ride (because of the speed rules while on the Swan River) and good commentary of some of the buildings, homes, etc., that we were passing. Following a short stop in Fremantle to pick up additional passengers, we were off to Rottnest. The one-way trip took about an hour. There was some decent wind during the trip so the waters were a bit rough. We were fine, but there were people who definitely got seasick. I'd suggest motion sickness medicine if you're susceptible.

Upon arrival, they unload a handful of bicycles and you can take a helmet from a bin they have there - and no, they're not santized/washed after every use as we saw the employees just throw the ones we used all day back into the same bin. Either way, the bikes are functional and we didn't have any problems.

Overall, I would definitely recommend some form of transportación to get the most of the island - whether that be a bike, tour bus, or segway. Walking it is not conductive and you'll only find yourself walking a few hundred yards in either direction outside of the small main area. With a bike, you can see much more of it and with a tour bus, even more.

There are a handful of dining options, but all are pretty basic. Good food, but don't expect a lot of options outside burgers, sandwiches, some pizza, and baked goods.

The Quokkas are everywhere around the central part of the island as I'm sure people feed them scraps so they've unfortunately learned that's where to be. Plenty of options there to get your selfie.

I give this five stars because what you see is what you get. Essentially a ferry ride with some basic commentary, a safe ride to/from, and a functioning bike to get around the island. Worth it all.

I have been planning this trip to Rottnest for 4 yrs. My was so excited, however, once we got off the ferry you are just given a cycle , no information or contact if something goes wrong etc. we planned our cycle ride so we could cycle the whole island, we stopped 20 min from the port for a cuppa at a lovely friendly cafe. We locked the bikes up but when we went back the rusty lock had seazed so the key wouldn’t open the lock, this left the bike unusable, we had no phone number no instructions and were just stuck there. Eventually we asked the lovely lady who owned the shop if she could phone someone, she phoned a different bike company on the island who bikes have an emergency phone number painted on their bikes, they put her in touch with. Our company, who promised they send someone out with another bike within 30 min. We sat in the heat waiting, after 2 hrs it became clear nobody was coming. We had to go back to the helpful lady In the shop and get her to phone again, tbe company told us they sent someone who said nobody was there ( we had not left the bikes once) and they cut the lock off, well clearly they cut Someone else’s lock off!!!!!! They still offered us no solution. In the end the Lady in the shop felt so sorry for us she brought her buggy round put our bikes in the back and took us to the other bike place where they let us leave our useless bike and gave us another for free. This whole experience left us with just 90 min to explore the island and get the bikes back and on the ferry. When we took the loaned bike back we then had to carry the broken bike back to the ferry, as obviously with a broken lock the bike was unrideable, when we handed the bike in we told them we were furious as it had ruined our day, the guy just shrugged and took the bike. Disappointed is an understatement .

*Likely to sell out: Based on Viator’s booking data and information from the provider from the past 30 days, it seems likely this experience will sell out through Viator, a Tripadvisor company.
