About
Our dog carts let you explore the Arctic nature as it transitions from Autumn to Winter. Take charge and let the huskies lead the way on an unforgettable ride.
Whether you want to be a passenger or try your hand at steering the cart and the huskies is up to you. The ride takes you on a journey through the forest and along the banks of the Alta River, famous for its salmon fishing.
Our family joined their ranks over three decades ago. We have spent the years racing and learning about dogsledding. This knowledge is the foundation of the dog trips that we offer our guests.
You’ll get to experience the Arctic countryside, just as it is changing its colours and preparing for the oncoming winter.

Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- barbarawP406ET0 contributionsGreat sled dog experience, super fun!!!Brage, the owner of the kennel drove our sled! He was kind and friendly, answering all our questions. Was an exciting dog sled trip on a snowy path. We learned about dogsledding, met the dogs, and had a great time talking with the employees who were all very friendly.Written November 5, 2024
- Andrew S0 contributionsOnce in a lifetimeFrom arrival to departure, what an amazing experience. We were fortunate to arrive at Alta alongside a snowfall, so we actually enjoyed the real McCoy. Staff/guide amazing, dogs brilliant.Written November 4, 2024
- Mobile144364939260 contributionsWonderful way to spend time in AltaHighly recommended. Amazing experience we all enjoyed riding with the dogs even without snow. Our host was brilliant and the whole experience including hot drinks and cake in the large tent round a roaring fire was memorable. Spending time with the dogs of all ages who are so affectionate at the end of the trip was the perfect endingWritten October 27, 2024
- around_the_world_RN0 contributionsSo much fun!We had a great guide who picked us up from the tourist info building. She was very fun to talk to and knowledgeable about dog sledding and all the dogs. We did the dry dog sledding with wheels since it wasn’t snowing yet but it was still so fun! We first learned how to drive them and got to meet the dogs, then we went for about an hour ride, switching drivers halfway so we could each take a turn. When we got back we went and had some coffee and got to play with the puppies and meet all the other dogs. It was such a fun experience! I borrowed the suit and boots since it was muddy and I recommend that if you don’t have proper clothes! On the website when we were looking to book there wasn’t availability, but we called and they were able to book us so try that!Written September 22, 2024
- Claire S0 contributionsA must seeWe only had time for a brief visit as we were visiting Alta by cruise ship, but we enjoyed every moment. We were treated to lots of canine cuddles and even had the chance to see the most beautiful tiny puppies. We are planning our next visit to stay over at the Lodge and spend more time in this wonderful place.Written June 23, 2024
- katkins830 contributionsAmazing!I visited Holmen Husky Lodge on a three night trip. It was absolutely brilliant! Everything about this trip was absolutely top notch. The accommodation is brilliant, very warm and cosy. The sauna and outdoor jacuzzi were absolutely sublime - the perfect place to relax after a busy day dog sledding! The food was absolutely top notch - great veggie options too! The staff were all absolutely lovely, and a special mention must go to Niklas, who was the perfect host. And the dogs…the absolute stars of the show! They were beautiful. So keen to run, so affectionate, and clearly loved by those caring for them. We spent three days sledding, including one ride under moonlight and two longer daytime rides, where we travelled through forests and along a frozen river, stopping for lunch with a campfire. We were incredibly lucky to see the Northern Lights, which was the icing on the cake for an already perfect trip. It was so good that I’ve already booked again for next year!Written March 13, 2024
- K1019ZXpatrickd0 contributionsDon't miss this experience!I just finished the 5-hour River Tour today and it was great. Our guide was Tess and as I expected she was a complete professional focused on our safety and taking care of the dogs and providing the service I booked. What I was not expecting was someone with a passion for the sport and the dogs that she worked hard to share with us. She also took the time to really teach us some tricks in how to be a better musher and added more challenging trails as she increased our skill level. The highlight of the trip was when she took us off the trail into deep fresh snow!Written March 11, 2024
- Nvp120 contributionsMust-see when in Alta!I wish I could give them more stars! This is an amazing family business that treats their animals fairly and lovingly. All the dogs seemed happy and content, were healthy and lively. The mushers were so nice too. Shoutout to Jost and Peter! I would like to come visit you and your beautiful place again one day.Written March 8, 2024
- Lucy_p25070 contributionsDog lovers dreamWe love Dogs and this trip is all about Dogs! The lodge is set in a lovely location in Alta and your accommodation is right next to the Dog yard! Looking out at the wonderful snowy Forrest from the Lavoo listening to the dogs howling is a fantastic experience! The staff at Holmen Husky couldn’t do enough for us and really let us get involved with the dogs, from harnessing them, to putting their booties on and re-clamping their collars when one or two may have made a break for it! The dogs loved their job and so did the staff! We were gutted to leave, could have stayed in that dog yard all year!Written March 3, 2024
- O5266DGmikep0 contributionsAmazing ExperienceAmazing experience, well organised and informative staff , lots of time with the very friendly dogs 🐕 Great fun doing the sledding, out host Rasmussen was brilliant and made this a terrific experience, would highly recommend 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Written February 23, 2024
- missmyvw0 contributionsPhenomenal on all countsReading about the multi-day tours here fills me with jealousy! We only had two hours, on a ship excursion, but it was phenomenal! Very well organized: we got to learn about raising & racing the dogs, spend time with them, and take an exhilarating guided 2-person sled ride through a snowy forest at night. The guides were super friendly, personable & informative (excellent English, also), but what really stood out was their love for the animals. They could name each of the many dogs, as well as their littermates, history and personality quirks. And the dogs clearly loved them -- the dogs were surprisingly affectionate to all the guests, but you could tell the staff were "their people". They also clearly enjoyed pulling the sleds. Knowing how dismally animals are sometimes treated by a commercial operation, this was pure joy.Written February 7, 2024
- G7330PLmatthewc0 contributionsFirst Class Dog Sledding ExperienceMy wife and I visited Holman Husky twice on our trip to Norway. The dog sledding experience and hospitality professionalism of the entire staff was first class. Our first group sledding adventure with Tess was fun, informative and a great introduction to Holman and their dogs. However, our second private sledding adventure with Nicholas could not have been more fun. He let us attach the dogs, plan our route and give us a customized sledding experience we will never forget. He was instructional, informative personable and a great person to spend a few hours with. The dogs are all overly-friendly and the puppy play area was so much fun. This is a company that takes care of their dogs and it shows. I would highly recommend booking this experience and believe Erik and his team are truly a professional group.Written January 16, 2024
- efc6070 contributionsExhilarating for the whole familyWhat a unique, warm, fantastic experience with wonderful staff and delicious food! We travelled with two young boys under 10. The lodge is warm and inviting, the dogs are incredible, the dog sledding was exhilarating. Highly recommended!!Written January 7, 2024
- MandL-OM0 contributionsAurora & husky hugsWe visited as a tour excursion from our cruise ship. Not sledding but Northern Lights & meeting the huskies. We received a great welcome from the team (human and canine). No Northern Lights, as the sky was filled with snow, but great videos on both the Aurora but also all about husky racing. We were entertained all evening and really loved having cuddles with the huskies. Shame not to see the Aurora, but know it’s always a risk but not disappointed as we had such a great time.Written January 1, 2024
- jensmartink20170 contributionsSuper experienceIf you have any time at all, you must experience a dog sled ride. We went with Husky Lodge. The staff there are super welcoming and ensure you have a fantastic experience - even on New Year's Day. Thank you and Happy New Year to everyone at Husky LodgeWritten December 31, 2023

We visited Holmen Husky as an excursion through our Cruise & Maritime visit to Alta. The trainers and owners are absolutely brilliant and they help you through driving and tell you anything you want to know about the dogs, the area and the history of dog carting! The dogs are absolutely beautiful and just stunning animals! If you get the opportunity to drive the carts... Do it! It's a truly amazing experience and aside from steering your cart and using the breaks...the dogs do the work for you! A genuinely wonderful experience and just made our entire holiday incredible. The dogs are so well cared for and such good natured. Just gorgeous creatures! That trip teamed up with Northern Lights views has made the entire holiday, and coping with the -3°C, worth while!

Having learnt about this place through my taxi driver, we contacted Eirik and he managed to accommodate the 6 of us one day later before we left ALTA. Everything for the clothing was provided. Hearing the dogs, watching the dogs getting so excited to run was truly amazing. They do a little training session on being able to handle the carts- the sos and songs before we head through the dog area with all their kennels. Then we saddled up and took turns in being the Musher and passenger. We were out on the journey for about an hour and it was so much fun, and the dogs loved it when we saw a little bit of snow. When we got back we were to meet more dogs, take pics and ask loads of questions. We then sat by there fire for hot juice, cookies and puppies.... not to eat but to have lots of cuddles. It was so sweet and everyone felt at home with their pup and the handlers coming to see and chat with us too. We didn’t really want to leave but a restaurant was waiting for us. All in all with the shuttle, it took about 3 hrs in total - so worth the money,

Hi. We are on a cruise arriving in Alta on 4th October 2019 for the day. Two passengers. We are looking to have a tour involving huskies. We arrive in port around 8am and depart 4pm so would need guaranteed return to port before then. The cruise did have an excursion but this is fully booked and therefore we are looking at booking independently. Please let us know if available, what included, timings and price for two persons. Thank you. Jason
