Highlights
Access incredible outdoor beauty on this Icelandic horseback riding tour
Travel light—all required riding equipment is provided
Flexible tour–pick from morning or afternoon start times
Stay hydrated—coffee, tea, or hot chocolate is provided
What to expect
On arrival, meet your instructor to adivse of your ability level—beginner, intermediate, or experienced. Get up-close to the Icelandic horses, learning about this gentle breed. Descendants of Viking horses brought here in the 10th century, these sturdy, good-nature steeds are known for their tölt, a four-beat gait that makes riding on rugged terrain smooth and comfortable. Next, watch a short instructional video, don your provided riding gear, and hop into the saddle. Learn to ease your horse into the tölt, and set out behind your instructor. Soon afterward, having watched you riding, your instructor splits you into three groups—beginners, intermediates, and experienced. Beginners ride slowly over easy terrain, with intermediate and experienced riders tackling more challenging routes at different paces. Just advise your instructor if you want to go slower or faster. As you ride, soak in the beautiful scenery. Weave through lava fields and moorland, passing volcanic mountains and lakes. After your trek, savor coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at the stables.

Staff make you feel very safe
Jul 2020 • Family
The staff was super friendly and made my whole family feel safe and comfortable before we took off. The ride was perfect for beginners and even my son (who was scared in the beginning) had a great experience!

Horse Riding at Ìshetar Riding Centre
Mar 2020 • Couples
Me and my girlfriend recently visited Ìshetar for a two hour riding experience. We were picked up from our designated bus top on time and swiftly transported there, all the staff at the centre were extremely friendly and accommodating, and upon a short introductory video we were shown to our horses. Prior to this they ask you of your riding experience. All the horses are very well cared for and our guides were knowledgeable and made sure each and every guest was happy and comfortable. Luckily for us, the weather was perfect and we were met with beautiful views of the Icelandic landscape (see photos), we set out for a slow walk in a single file line, and after taking a rest stop with pictures, we were offered to ride back to the stables either at a slower or faster pace. The whole experience was extremely memorable and we both had an amazing time, and would certainly recommend this experience to anyone and will definitely be returning some time in the future.

Pleasant
The horses were very docile and easy to control. Guides were friendly. Warm overalls, boots and helmet were provided. We had some time to pet the horses which was nice. Would be better if we could feed them too. The ride was scenic but only one stop for pictures. Would be better if there were more. The guide let us ride a little faster which was great. This tour would be good for solo travellers.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. I'm glad you were happy with our horses and the gear provided and thank you for those helpful tips. If you ever come back to visit us we have a tour called Meet the horse witch i think you would really enjoy. There you can feed and groom our horses and learn a lot abut them, take as many pictures as you like and explore our stables. Afterwards those that feel up for it can do a bit of riding in our paddocks or on a track nearby. Hope to see you again someday if you ever come back to visit Iceland and the horses!

Absolute dream!
Mar 2020
I miss this activity already! I have ridden for most of my life and have experienced nothing like this. The horses are friendly and docile, and the instructers were so friendly, cheerful and helpful. The views were stunning and they have a horse suitable for every level, their "tolt" is so smooth it feels impossible to fall off! Perfect for my partner with little to no experience in riding. This was one of our favourite things in Iceland, and was truly a unique experience that you will not find with any other breed of horse.

Pleasure holiday
This was an amazing experience! Friendly, efficient and professional (including the horses). We arranged to be picked up and dropped off, which worked very well (despite our cofusion over bus stops - worth checking www.busstop first as google maps not as accurate). I will use Ishestar again when I next visit 👍

Great experience in beautiful scenery and beautiful horses
Feb 2020 • Couples
We went with TUI to ishestar, around a 20 minute drive from Reykjavik. We had an amazing time, exploring the lava fields with beautiful scenery and beautiful horses. Ishestar cater for all abilities and provide all the equipment your could possibly need. I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone looking to learn more about Icelandic horses and enjoy stunning scenery. Thanks ishestar!!!!

Icelandic Ponies are Adorable!
Dec 2019
We did this in December which really isn't a great idea. Keep this activity for the summer. While we are experienced riders that enjoyed a tolt on these cuties, it was very cold. The view was gorgeous-when we could see it. There are very large groups at this stable and the ride is pretty but not too impressive. Each group had around 30 ponies in it. We set out in freezing rain that felt like needles on our face, rode through a near white out and a little rain was thrown in to make it a full experience. They don't refund your money so the show goes on regardless of the weather, snow, hail, freezing rate, and probably volcanoes.

Loved riding with them!
Jan 2020
I ended up having some free time in the afternoon so I booked an hour long ride, if I had more time I would have booked a longer ride! It was very convenient to be picked up from the bus stop in Reykjavik by my hotel and it was a short drive to the farm. We had the option to use their coats, boots, and jumpsuits for the ride. They also provide helmets and require you to wear one (safety first!) There is a short video about riding basics and then you head to the barn. The horses are friendly and well cared for. I've ridden many times before but we had some folks in the group that had not. The guides picked horses for people individually, based on experience and request (a tall one or slow one, etc) All of the horses in our 10 person group were well behaved and sweet. They ride nose to tail which is a bit different than other trail rides I have done where you have to keep space so you don't get kicked. It was nice to not have to worry about spacing and enjoy the scenery. My husband doesn't ride because he is scared of horses, I would feel comfortable coming back here and having him try to ride with the horses at Ishestar. After the ride, we were welcome to hang out with the horses, take pictures, and pet them before the bus brought us back. It was a great experience!

Thank you for your kind words. I'm really glad you had such a great time with us. Our horses get along great with each other and the Icelandic horse is a very social animal, witch is why we don't need to worry about having much space between them and just focus on enjoying the ride and the scenery. That also makes it very safe to hang out with them even when they are loose in our paddocks. I hope to see you and your husband here one day if you ever come back to Iceland.

Most amazing experience
Jan 2020
I have ridden some before, but I would still consider myself to be a beginner. The guides were informed, kind, and so helpful. I learned a lot about Icelandic horses and had a wonderful time. My group was 5 people and 2 guides, so it felt small and personal. Any question I had was answered. This was by far my favorite riding experience and I recommend it to anyone visiting Iceland!
