This was a long day trip from Amsterdam. I was not particularly impressed since we have been to Florence and Venice. Our tour was pretty much an on-time bus ride. We also had 2 obnoxious women who fought for seats and talked very loudly on...More

Hello Teacher Jill By coincidence we initially stayed at the Palace for a few days which is 100 metres from Owl and just 50 metres along the canal from Marriott and opposite restaurant area . . The Leidsplein tram stop is only 100m away and just over the canal bridge and opposite the American Hotel on the road into central We used the Leidsplein 1 and 2 Tram( they run every few minutes so just hop on the first to arrive ) to and from the city central all hours of the day and night it was very safe and they announce all the stops in English. The tour drop off about 9.00/9.30 pm is at the public tour /hop on hop off bus parking stop in the middle of the main square. When we got off there was plenty of people travelling around the square as it is the main thoroughfare to the central Station, Trams and Metro, all within 20-50 metres from the bus drop off. We didn't feel uncomfortable at all as there are plenty of Amsterdammers and tourists and police about day and night . If I was you I would catch the tram no 1 or 2 into central from Leidsplein tram stop( 10 minute ride at most)and merely do the reverse on way back that night . The hotel porter will tell you the quickest walking street to the Leidsplein tram stop. From the Leidsplein tram stop it would only be 100 +metres to the Owl and again there seems to be always plenty of people ,bikers and traffic about so you should feel safe . Hope all this helps ,we found the city to be very comfortable and safe for us but remember bikers have right of way at all times . If in doubt then simply ask tour guide to point to the Central Tram stop for Leidsplein, the tram numbers were no 1 or 2 into and out of Central . After the Leidsplein stop the trams spread out in all directions so i reckon you need to get off here then cross the little canal bridge and down the street to the Owl. The free city map has the tram route guide and numbers on it from memory. Hope all this helps ,yes like you initially we were a bit wary ,so just take usual precautions like button up your bag but we found the city to be very comfortable and safe for us .
