Small Group Tour: Etna wine and Alcantara from Taormina
US$113.01
Overview
Discover Mt. Etna without a strenuous hike to the summit, and check out a lava cave and the Alcantara Gorge, too. The day trip from Taormina showcases the history-rich foothills and woodland around Europe's largest active volcano, forgoing the need to scale any steep hills. A traditional Sicilian lunch with wine from the volcanic region is also included.
What to Expect
Leave your Taormina hotel in the early morning, and travel to the foothills of Mt. Etna.

After just an hour on the road, you’ll arrive at the volcano’s base for a guided hike around the beguiling lava formations, craters, and trees that typify Mt. Etna’s surrounds. When you’ve had your volcano fix, continue to a nearby lava cave and peer into its dark corners, courtesy of a head torch.

Take a break for lunch, savoring three courses of tasty Sicilian fare with wine grown in the Mt. Etna region. As you eat, you’ll learn about the mineral-rich volcanic soil that gives the wine its unique characteristics.

Continue to the natural ravine of Alcantara Gorge that was formed from an ancient flow of lava. Wander in the shadows of the towering cliffs and pose for photos against its striking backdrop. Your tour then returns to your Taormina hotel.

We normally avoid guided tours when we are away, but we don't regularly hike active volcanos so we decided to give this a shot. This was a winner. With the small group of 8 people, you are able to have a lot of interaction with...More

The water in the gorge is very shallow - maybe 12 inches max. It's also very cold. We wore shorts for the tour and just kicked off our shoes when we arrived at the gorge. No need to change.
