I went solo for this tour from Taormina. It was the best part of my trip! Salvo picked me up from hotel in Taormina. He was quite a character! I met 3 of his donkeys. My donkey was Gina. They were all quite nice and sweet. I used to ride donkeys in Santorini. But this time was much more pleasant and educational. To be honest I did not remember much about the movie The Godfather. The village of Savaca was stunning, a bit run down, old, full of history, and mysterious. Now I review godfather’s movie about Michael’s stay in Sicily, I suddenly realized how the movie was made in this village. Salvo opened a few churches doors to show me about local traditions and history. It was such an eye opening experience. I shall miss Salvo and his lovely donkeys.

Absolutely Fabulious: authentic and not to be missed, rather repeated !
Jul 2020
Sicily is a nice destination, but to make it unforgettable: do this donkey tour !!! It is not a recommendation, it is a must-do !!! Savoca is still such an authentic medieval town, in an incredible setting. The donkeys make the experience even more genuine and Salvo (their owner) ... is a true ambassador of the Sicilian hospitality !!! It does not feel as a tour ... much more as walking with your best friend! And if you have children ... be prepared: they will adore this man and his donkeys !!! To my little ones, it for sure was the highlight of our Sicily holiday: Salvo maid them roar with laughter ... Forget Marlon Brando: Salvo is the true Godfather of Savoca, the donkeys and the children !!!
Go, Go, Go ... !!! If our Sicily trip was longer, we went twice !!!

Guide was great, and the tour was totally unique and enjoyable.
Jun 2019
While checking into our hotel in Taormina, my wife noticed a brochure regarding a donkey riding tour of Savoca, where some of The Godfather was filmed. The receptionist at the hotel was not familiar with the tour, when my wife asked about calling to get information she was informed that it was too late, and that no one would pick up the phone.A gentleman picked up immediately and arrangements were made. A gracious gentleman picked us up early the next, morning, drove us to meet our transportation up the hills to Savoca,a couple of beautiful donkeys, and our memorable day began. As my wife says”two asses on two asses” Have a gelato at Bar Vitelli.

Donkeys, a dog and a way of life
Oct 2019 • Solo
This is a magical, unique experience. Aside from the obvious--the adorable, well- behaved donkeys and dog, the gorgeous, tranquil and historical gem that is Savoca, the gastronomic delights, the fascinating history and iconic pop culture thrills of being in the same spots as were ancient peoples and actors in The Godfather--you will start believing that we CAN turn off, disconnect from wires and reconnect to ourselves, to places and to others who wish you well.

Your guide Salvo wants to share with you his love for his home town, his history, culture, food and friends. He is very proud and clearly passionate about the Savoca way of life. My experience there has made me a true believer that this way of life can and should be preserved (or at least, rediscovered).

Salvo was a gentleman and a reliable, safe and enthusiastic host (I am a solo female traveler). The townspeople are friendly, open and hospitable. All speak competent English, but Salvo helped me advance my beginner's Italian by speaking Italian with me.

So, this experience was far far more and better than simply the cool aspects of the tour. Go for the donkeys and the Godfather sites, but be warned that Savoca's reach can extend beyond that and into your soul, too.

ALERT: Sicilian Donkeys Have Unlocked Time Travel!
Aug 2019
I encourage you to read the other 5 star reviews of Salvo and his children, ahem, animals. Since all of the reviews are 5 stars, you should read them all. Having recently had the privilege of meeting Salvo and spending half a day with him, I can confirm that the reviews are accurate and actually a bit understated. I say understated because it is difficult, if not impossible, in the context of an online review to capture the fully immersive nature of this experience. To be clear, despite the marketing language necessary to attract your attention, this is not a "tour". This is a lifetime memory-creating-adventure that will be used to compare all other vacation events going forward. If you are still reading my review, you may start to think this is too good to be true and might be skeptical of such glowing praise. I understand. I was just in your shoes when my wife proposed we commit to riding donkeys through an old town in the hills of Sicily (I know, everything is old in Sicily). Only through her insistence and dare I say, donkey-like stubornness, did we keep our time with Salvo and only through this review am I able to thank Salvo for having the vision to provide such an educational, informative, entertaining, and memorable day in Savoca. So THANK YOU Salvo, Molly, Gina, and Katarina for transporting us back in time to a centuries-old town and sharing part of yourselves with us.

Finally, a word of warning for those who may be considering this experience. Salvo is not a cruise ship style tour operator who can conjure more donkeys on days when 2000 passengers descend on Messina for their day trip to flood the streets of Taormina. He is a husband, father, and passionate citizen of Savoca trying to do the best he can to provide for his family in a tough employment environment in Sicily. Donkeys are expensive to maintain and Salvo's prices are more than fair. That said, without the support of adventurous tourists willing to allow themselves to be transported in time on the backs of nearly extinct beasts, Salvo's "tour" will not be around for you to enjoy!!!

Fun day
May 2019 • Couples
We wanted a godfather visit that didn't involve a tour bus, so when we saw the donkey tour, we decided to give it a try. The owner, Salvo, picked us up directly from our cruise ship docking area, which was great! The godfather tour that he provided us was so much fun, but even better was traveling through the villages and seeing the beautiful sites. I was a little apprehensive about riding a donkey, but no worries. They are gentle creatures. My husband walked a good amount, for the exercise - and he definitely DID get in his exercise. Very fun excursion.

The Ultimate Authentic Savoca Tour on Beautiful Calm Donkeys
Apr 2019 • Couples
DO NOT MISS THIS EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU ARE IN SICILY

!f you want to feel immersed in history and authenticity, in the most beautiful surroundings with fantastic views and as an added bonus, with gorgeous calm serene donkeys.

Salvo, a knowledgeable English speaking guide will share all his knowledge and passion of his own community with you whilst also tasting olive oils, Almond wine, biscotti!

HIs tour of churches and the crypts was captivating, and his knowledge of times gone by, enchanting!

We saw Bar Vitelli and the Church that starred in the Godfather movie, but oh so much, much more!

It is very clear to see his passionate love for his well-kept village, Donkeys and lovely dog Molly.

We cannot recommend this experience more highly and can't wait to return.

Thank you so much, Salvo,
A presto Janet, and Mark
