What to expect
Your gladiator lesson takes place at the Gladiator School of Rome, located near the Colosseum on the historic Appian Way. Specializing in the reenactment of ancient Roman life and gladiator fighting, your instructors are members of the Historic Group of Rome and will begin your class by providing you with your costume — a traditional belt, tunic, leather gloves, and a training sword known as a rudis. Learn the basic skills of gladiator sword fighting before summoning your imagination and channeling your inner ancient Roman as you fight off ferocious lions and battle other sword-wielding gladiators. If you wish, you can participate in an optional gladiator tournament, complete with a prize for the victor. Either way, all participants receive a certificate of accomplishment at the end of your lesson. Friends and family are allowed to watch your class from the viewing platform. Admission to the Gladiator School of Rome Museum is also included so you can check out gladiator weapons and other artifacts.

Fun activity for parents and kids
Aug 2020
Brought 7 year old son here and it was one of his favourite bits of Rome. After a short tour of the museum to try out various shields, weapons and helmets we spent two hours on the training ground where our instructor taught us some moves, put us through some light training and then some practice fights. Our instructor was great with children and kept the experience fun and engaging throughout.

So much fun
This was my kids favourite part of Rome, they had so much fun (and so did my husband as he got proper involved) the gladiator training them was excellent and kind also making sure to involve the little one who was only 4 as well as challenging my older children ages 12 and 15. My 6 year old didn’t want to leave. Definitely worth doing

'Titus' was amazing. It was a truly enjoyable experience, engaging and lighthearted while delivering a history lesson. Fantastic for kids, teenagers and adults. We enjoyed this attraction after spending a morning at the Vatican, it was a nice way to finish a big day.

fun and educational afternoon out!
Jan 2020 • Family
Our guide/coach was incredibly knowledgeable, personable and funny! As a family of 4 with a grumpy teen (and enthusiastic 10 year old) we all learned so much about gladiator life. On a weekday in slow season, we ended up with a private class, which was pleasant. We arrived a few minutes early and were able to start right away so we didn’t have to wait. Also, even though only some of us participated (by plan) we were all engaged by the experience. They were gracious and helped call us a cab, as well. While not a marathon, it is a bit of a workout! Pushups / lunges were involved:)

What a fantastic experience. We have 4 boys 13, 11, 10, and 7 and a 4 year old Daughter. Our instructor did everything in a manner that entertained everyone while keeping it age appropriate. While
My daughter didn’t officially participate, he found a way to involve her and Help her have fun too. In 10 days of touring Italy, I think this will be one thing they will ALL remember.

Made the top 3 activities
Dec 2019
I went to this school with my 13 year old son during a 2-week trip to Italy and France. When asked for his favorite moments from the trip, Gladiator School made it into the top 3 (skiing in Alps and yummy yummy food were the other 2 so this school was in very good company)

This is a fun and educational experience. The 1st of 3 distinct parts is a brief (30 minutes?) discussion/lecture/entertainment on gladiator culture - very interesting. There was a lot more depth and subtly to gladiator culture than 2 men killing each other while the crowd roars. Part 2 is 'Conditioning/Training'. This certainly would not prepare anyone for battle, but it did give a good introduction to basic sword fighting techniques. Part 3 is sparring - practice fighting. This is the part my son (age 13) loved. We paired up to fight each other with padded swords. Very fun. Very structured and as safe as things could be giving 2 kids padded swords and saying - 'attack'. We had an odd-number of students and I ended up fighting two kids in 2-on-1 battle - which the kids loved even more.

Instructor was very good at entertaining and keeping things disciplined and moving forward. Lots of clever jokes and comments that kept all on their toes. The course play-acts as thought the students are being trained - much like a boot-camp - but a lot more gentle and tongue-in-cheek.

I highly recommend it for kids that like physical activity. All the kids (5 of them) and adults (2 of them) enjoyed the experience.

Great fun for older kids, too, and for adults to watch!
Jan 2020
My fourteen-year old daughter was greatly anticipating a battle with her 20-year old sister, and they had a blast! There is a period for pictures in costume prior to the event, along with a "stockade" and full-size cutouts where you stick your face through on the gladiator body - we had fun doing that, too. Our guide, Peter, was phenomenal. Our group included 10-year old twins (boy-girl), their 8-year old cousin, and their parents, all of us from the USA, and a family of three from Argentina. Peter acted in character balancing just enough harsh acting to be a gladiator trainer with a gentle humor when dealing with the younger kids. He spoke to us in the small "museum" of gladiator artifacts, telling us a bit about what it was like to train, and how gladiators succeeded and made money, and about Rome invading other areas. When the young man (13, maybe?) from Argentina wasn't participating as much as the others, Peter talked with his father. It seemed language was the issue, so despite already speaking to us in English very well, (he is Italian), he switched effortlessly into Spanish to draw the teen into activities and the boy responded positively. Quite impressive. We all laughed and enjoyed ourselves despite the cold (it is outdoors, so dress appropriately-my toes were going numb, as I didn't take into account the sun going down while we were there. My bad.) He called out, "Disaster!" and say things like, "Why are you laughing? They're going to die and you're laughing?" At the end, they shook hands goodbye, and checked that we enjoyed ourselves. The place is off the beaten path, but our taxi driver found it. They arranged a taxi to return us to our hotel, telling us the cost up front. Our driver back was having some serious car issues, and he apologized for the rougher ride, but we made it back safely. (I think he may have had dirty fuel in the tank.) We have now adopted, "Disaster!" into our conversations and have fun memories of the day.

Funnier than a fart
Dec 2019 • Family
Marcus was awesome. He was very serious and very strict with my 10 year old twin boys and their 8 year old brother. “Shut up slave!” “Disaster!’” and the like all through the session. I am sure he pumped more history into them in a short space of time than they received through the rest of the audio tours on our holiday combined. Very immersive experience with lots of push ups. I don’t know how he did it but he managed to be strict, serious, gentle and funny all at the same time.
So far this has been the highlight of our trip for my sons and I am still hearing “disaster!” whenever one of them mucks something up. They are also very proud of their newly obtained citizenship.
It’s out of the way but google will easily get you there via public transport and a bit of walking if you decide not to take a taxi or Uber. For us getting there and back was fun too.

Fantastic experience
We took out 8 year old and he loved every minute of the experience. The gladiator instructor who took us round the museum and then took him through the training and fighting was excellent , he was very engaging and full of energy.
We would highly recommend this experience.
