Pompeii and Herculaneum Day Trip from Naples
Explore the ancient ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii on this day trip from Naples. Led by a local guide, marvel at the UNESCO-listed site of Pompeii (own expense), which lay buried under volcanic ash for centuries following Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. Afterward, head to a cameo and coral factory to watch the craftsmen at work before sitting down to a traditional Italian lunch. Top off the afternoon with a trip to Ercolano to discover the ruins of Herculaneum (own expense.) Your trip will conclude with transportation back to Naples.
What to Expect
Begin your trip with pickup from your select Naples hotel and hop aboard your coach toward Pompeii. Once buried under a blanket of ash from Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD, the city wasn't unearthed until the 18th century.

As you enter (own expense), follow your guide through the ruins and learn the fascinating history behind the ancient city. Pass excavations of the Teatro Grande, which once housed up to 5,000 spectators, and the Forum.

Continue to a family-run corals and cameo factory to learn more about the jewelry-making process. Afterward, walk to the 18th-century Ristorante Vesuvio for a delicious, Italian-style lunch.

Journey next to the coastal town of Ercolana, where the ruins of Herculaneum reside, another town struck during the infamous eruption. Though Pompeii is more widely-known, Herculaneum hosts a wealth of archaeological treasures. Enter (own expense) and explore at leisure, admiring the ancient monuments, preserved mosaics and fossils nearly 2,000 years old.

Your day trip will conclude with transportation back to your original departure point.

My tour guide was awesome. He was so full of information, and took time to answer everyone's questions. Both sites were amazing. It was very cool to have the juxtaposition between the two sites and to learn about how the eruption of Vesuvius effects them...More
