We did a two hour tour of Pomepii with and English speaking tour guide Vincenzo, he was excellent, and very informative. The only reason I have given this a 4 star rating, is because 2 hours is not enough to cover the huge area, this is purely down to us, and the type of tour we booked - we would have liked longer (we will know for next time). You can go to Pompeii via the train, and do the whole thing with an audio guide, which will work out a lot cheaper than a tour, but we were happy to have a guide, and we felt we had value for money.

Pompeii has the finest preserved frescos in the world, due to the preservation from being covered in ash and then 1600 years of nature reclamation. We only had 3 hours to tour; when we will come back, we will spend 3 days!!

A Treat For The Senses! An Archaeological Site For The Ages.
Sep 2017 • Couples
One of the best parts of our recent trip to Europe. Most of our tour was in Italy and due to the flight scheduling, we had an extra day after the guided tour ended to do as we wish. Well, I immediately booked a tour of Pompeii ruins and Amalfi coast. What a treat! The ruins are well preserved and the guided tour was excellent. We had a wonderful tour guide, ( who was an archaeologist); who gave us so much information - it was a lot to digest. I would highly recommend a visit to this site if you are in Italy - you will not be disappointed.

We had a guided tour through our Pompeii visit. Willy was extremely personal and engaged us throughout the whole two hour tour. The added information he provided too us you wouldn't read in a brochure. We were all given audio headsets so we didn't miss out of anything he said.

Thanks Willy for making our Pompeii experience so educational and worthwhile.

We booked our tour through City Wonders so we had the City Wonders guide as well as Willy the local guide.

Quite superb
Aug 2017
We visited twice in early August. The first time as part of an organised trip via Viator, the 2nd under our own steam 3 days later. The first trip was a guided tour with hotel pick up from our hotel in Sorrento.....the journey was an hour each way with multiple pick ups/drop offs - we spent about 2 hours at the site. We saw many of the major buildings but not all and we were "on the clock" so we couldn't spend the time we wanted at certain parts of the town. The guide was good but factually wrong on a number of points.....e.g., she told us that all 20,000 inhabitants in the town died. They didn't....about 90% escaped before the actual eruption. That aside the guide was generally quite good.

But we wanted to see more so we returned 3 days later via train from Sorrento. It was much easier than I imagined. The trains are very cheap and leave every 30 mins or so and take about 30 mins to Pompeii Scavi....the station is about 150m from the ticket office. Make sure you turn right and not left out of the station...turn left and you will end up with a tout for guided tours.

We were then able to spend our own time at some of the more remote buildings such as the main amphi-theatre which is at the far end of the town, about a 15/20 min walk from the Porta Marina entry point.....and it was worth it....perfectly preserved.

If you like Roman history you'll love this. Best to go when the site opens....it's not as hot or as crowded....the coach parties tend to get there about 11 ish.

An ancient Roman city
May 2017 • Couples
The arrangements for our tour of Pompeii were flawless. Transportation from Naples tp Pompeii was excellent. We had smart, knowledgeable English speaking guides, audio facilities and enough time.
The journey from Naples to Pompeii was a short one, perhaps less than an hour. The narration en route of the history of Pompeii by the guide was very useful.
Said to have been founded in the 7th or 6th century BC, Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was buried under 4 to 6 metres of volcanic ash and all its inhabitants killed.
The Pompeii site was rediscovered in the 16 th century but excavation probably started several centuries later.
The Pompeii site is remarkably well preserved, having been buried in ash and pumice and not exposed to air or moisture. The excavations reveal a flourishing city, with houses, well planned roads, a complex water system, gymnasium, amphitheater and a port. The objects that lay beneath the city are also remarkably well preserved and from these one can form an idea of life in an ancient Roman city.
The tour of Pompeii was fascinating. It should be one of the great heritage sites of mankind. A must visit.
It is better to start the tour of Pompeii early. It is a very popular site and, as the day progresses, it tends to get more and more crowded making proper viewing of the many small spaces difficult.

DIY and save money and time

We'd been before as part of an excursion group (2011) and were disappointed at being bustled through and the exaggerations of the guide*, so we did our research on the ruins while in UK and made our own way here. In towns, you'll see little books "Pompeii Reconstructed" for around 10 Euro- brilliant and come with a map.
Only 4.8 Euros return pp by train from Sorrento and the station is right next to the entrance. Could have bought "skip the queue" tickets for 15 Euro at the station but we went down to the main ticket office in case of reduced prices for pensioners (there isn't, only for kids); so queued and paid 13 Euro. Get a map, if you don't take one with you. Good walking shoes essential and a water bottle (which can be refilled for free at the drinking fountains) plus sunscreen. Pavements are high and you'll see stepping stones to cross the road - these kept the people's feet out of the muck that would accumulate. You might notice wheel ruts in the cobbles. Further in, some paths have been filled over and are smooth surfaced.
Obviously do the Forum area but find your way to The House of the Dancing Faun, then round the corner to the Vettii for frescoes. A bit of a walk to the Anfiteatro (ampitheatre) but well worth it, and the nearby garden (Octavio Quarto) with (dry now) water feature layout. If you have the strength, try walking on the city walls for the views and down by the mausoleums. According to the experts, there is only one brothel (extremely popular so expect to queue to see it) that can be uniquely identified - *the guides might tell you different and, no, the phalluses set in the road are not street signs to it - the phallus was a good luck/fertility symbol and there are many artefacts in Naples museum showing one. Do try and visit the museum before your visit as (obviously) all the best stuff is there.
In various buildings you'll see mosaic counters with holes - these were food outlets - and large "beehive" shaped stones - which were bakeries. Toilets are only by the entrances/exits, so don't get caught short. One eaterie inside - very busy and not great. Eateries outside also busy. You can't see it all in one visit.
People did evacuate before the fatal moment - those who didn't were people protecting their property from looters, or slaves. The shapes of people and animals you'll see at set locations are plaster casts - taken by the archaeologists who found these cavities and filled with plaster to take an impression, the body not surviving.
If you really can't DIY, try a small group guide as large tours are a lot of standing around to form around the guide and shuffling to see interests.

LOVED IT BUT GO TO HERCULANEUM TOO!!
Sep 2015 • Couples
We went to Sorrento on holiday in sept 2015. Visited Pompeii by getting the train from Sorrento train station to the site, which is cheap and easy peasy! Glad i didn't go with a huge tour load of people as it's easy to do on your own. We opted for the hand held type of recorded thingamajig but wished we'd had a proper guide (of which there are plenty to chose from at the site). The gadget things we had didn't work very well and were confusing, not knowing what they were talking about to which spot we we at and spoiled it a bit. In Herculaneum we had a guide and he brought everything to life! So, get a guide there! It is HUGE there, wear walking shoes as the HUGE cobbles can be very hard to get a good footing on. It's a great place to visit (see pics), so much history and stories of the sad event. Once you have seen this place, go to visit Herculaneum!! It's easier to get around, a lot more preserved as Pompeii was ruined by the ash and isn't as well preserved as Herculaneum which was covered in the hot lava mud and they have been able to excavate a lot more intact artifacts. The Pompeii bodies for instance have been filled with plaster to allow you to see how they were but in Herculaneum the REAL skeletons are still there, as they were. Definitely a MUST to see BOTH! Herculaneum is sooo much better! Take lots of water! Choose a cooler cloudier day. Check weather before hand as it's too hot walking around otherwise. Invest in a Chinese type fan for your hols, they come in very handy!

ABSOLUTELY USE A GUIDED TOUR!
Nov 2015 • Couples
Lots of contradictions on here regarding tours. In me and wife's opinion it is essential to have a guide to understand this place. We did Roman Forum a few days before by ourselves and it made no sense to us. We used Temperio (?) travel for Pompeii. Met them right off the train. The guide didn't have a microphone but small group we were able to huddle round him and fully understand. He was clear, informative and interesting. He also made sure we stayed out of way of other tours. Yes there are loads of others and you can hear them but not an issue. However we did late in October I imagine high season this place is crowded. Our guide showed us main parts in 2 hours and then you are free to explore rest of you want.
