Cold War Walking Tour of Berlin
From US$16.15
Overview

Berlin is known as a pivotal city in 20th-century politics, but its Cold War history is often overshadowed by its role in the Second World War. Familiarize yourself with the significant sites of Cold War Berlin and learn about life in the divided city from a professional guide. Visit notable attractions, including the Berlin Wall Memorial and Checkpoint Charlie, while avoiding the hassle of map reading and guidebooks and gaining holistic insight into the complex history of this city.

What to Expect

Meet your guide at Zoologischer Garten underground station and hear an account of the changes Berlin underwent after the Second World War, from the capital city of Nazi Germany to a city that came to represent the clash of two superpowers.

Then, follow the former site of the Berlin Wall and its “death strip”. Learn more about the many attempts to escape as you walk along Bernauer Strasse, toward the last remains of the wall itself at the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Next, walk through Checkpoint Charlie, the famous crossing point between East and West Berlin, and discover how the Cold War divided not only the city, but the country too. The next stop is the Brandenburg Gate, an important but everchanging symbol throughout the history of Berlin.

As you tread the very streets, learn more about what life was like behind the wall, gaining insights into the German Democratic Republic, before concluding your journey in the centre of East Berlin or Alexander Platz.

History brought to life

Brian was a great guide - keeping us engaged the whole time. Really interesting insights into Cold War Berlin that were told with enthusiasm and humour (that lightened the dark subject matter but didn't disrespect it!!). Thanks
