Highlights
This self-led day trip is perfect for independent-minded travelers
See a new side of the Riviera when you visit the Île Saint-Marguerite
Round-trip ferry tickets included; pick your own preferred departure times
Choose to visit the Fort Royal, hike the island’s trails, and more
What to expect
Board the ferry at Cannes port at your chosen departure time. Just a short 15-minute ferry ride off the French Riviera coast, Ile Sainte-Marguerite forms part of the Lérins Islands archipelago in the Golfe de la Napoule, and offers a heady blend of culture, history and nature. When you arrive, step off the ferry, breathe in fragrant scents of pine and eucalyptus and head off to begin exploring independently. Pick a hiking trail — well-marked trails cover the island — and traverse dense forests for a botanical discovery. Or simply stroll to the Batéguier pond to spot migratory birds, or Point de la Convention to appreciate a range of unique plant species that call Ile Sainte-Marguerite home. No trip to the island is complete without a visit to the Fort Royal, a former prison fortress built by Spanish invaders in the 17th century. Here is where the notorious 'Man in the Iron Mask' is said to have been imprisoned. Today the fortress finds new use as a maritime museum, with a wealth of archaeological finds that include 1st-century murals, artifacts from a 10th-century Saracen shipwreck and even Roman–era ceramics. Another option is the Méditerranoscope marine research center, which works to protect the diverse sea life in the waters around the Lérins Islands. If you get hungry, you can choose from two restaurants and two sandwich kiosks. Or bring a picnic! Ferries run regularly between Ile Sainte-Marguerite and Cannes, so when you’re ready to head back to the mainland, hop aboard for the short crossing back to port.

Man in the Iron Mask!
Oct 2019
Primarily, we visited the island to visit Fort Royal where the man in the iron mask was incarcerated. We weren't disappointed. The boat ride over to the island was very busy and only took 15 mins. Great views of Cannes and Juan les Pins from the boat. The museum is very well presented and the special Man in the Iron Mask exhibition was very interesting, especially the prison cell where he was held.We spent several hours here. The rest of the island was very beautiful with lovely walks. We took a picnic with us as there are few amenities on the island. A great day out!

Ile Sainte marguerite
Sep 2019 • Family
The island itself was great and the views were lovely, however there are no signs or directions on how to get to the ferry. There are a few piers and it is not made clear which one the ferry goes from. We ended up at the wrong one and it meant we wasted almost 2 hours just trying to find the pier to go from.

One of the best island we´ve ever seen
Jul 2019
It takes only up to 20 minutes from Golfe Juan port by fast boat. Whole island is really sbeautiful, pine, a lots of cicadas, crystal clear and cyan water, wild rocky beaches. It is cleaned, people respect all restictions, I like it. I only regret we did not have enough time to visit fortress here. If we travel to this area again, we will go here again for sure. We can strongly recommend as "must to see". You can count whole day trip.

Bought my e-ticket online very easily. Presented it at the ticket booth where a physical ticket was given. There are multiple tour operators there, so just make sure you bring it to the correct one. (Note if you add it to My Wallet on iPhone, the name of the tour company will not show, so it is better to screenshot the e-‘ticket bought through Trip Advisor as it states the tour operator’s name there).

Would strongly recommend a trip to Ile Saint Marguerite - such a beautiful island.

Great day trip without any cars!
Jul 2018
Loved our day on the island, walking everywhere. Snorkelling was great too and water was beautifully clear. Large trees protect you from the sun (we had 37C!) and near the ferry you will find some small restaurants which were ok.

We took the ferry to Ile Sainte-Marguerite, walked a round the island, toured though the Fort Royal, a 17th century prison that once housed the 'Man in the Iron Mask.' We stopped at the Restaurant L'Escale and had and order of their "small fish."

Super Convenient!
Sep 2018
I booked the ferry trip prior to arriving in Cannes, through Tripadvisor. It was simple and easy to do. The outward and inward timings were convenient and frequent enough to be able to spend time having an afternoon picnic on the island, which is what we did. Would definitely recommend - good value for money, drinks available on board, covered and open seating available as the ferry is a double-decker.
