The remote Gap of Dunloe features spectacular scenery but is hard to navigate, so this half-day tour makes it easy to access the photogenic mountain pass from Killarney’s medieval Ross Castle. The classic Irish adventure includes a narrated boat ride on the lakes of Killarney plus a pony-drawn carriage ride through the relatively untouched Black Valley, so you can travel the way that locals have for centuries.

I loved the trip. Even though there was a strong mist, it was a wonderful experience. The trip consisted of a carriage ride, and then onto a boat ride. The carriage was particularly amazing. It was an adventure from times' past. I hope the tour companies always keep it this way. No roof over your head; with both parts, it is you and the beautiful outdoors. CASH ALERT: In the break between the two events, you stop at a food/drink concession stand that only takes cash. I didn't have enough cash for food and for gratuities for both the horseman and the captain. I felt bad that both didn't get a tip.

This is by far the best and most experienced company to book when touring the Gap, the National Park, etc. by jaunting cart. The service, knowledge, jarveys (drivers) all combine to make an exceptional day in Killarney! This tour is always the best part of a trip to Killarney. Fifth generation family business says it all! Thanks to the whole team, including Patrick and Liam.

Highlight of our trip to Kerry! Everyone we encountered (Donal and Dux) was cheerful and informative, and the whole experience was very well organised by Tangney Tours. Hand sanitiser was provided at each point of the journey. We only discovered this the day before and so glad we booked -- will be recommending to friends visiting the area.

What can I say?! Absolutely fantastic from start to finish! From the two women who took us in their car to the Jaunty Cars... they were so kind and brilliant to listen to. Myself and the two American women were spellbound by the views when we got on the jaunty cars. Our driver, a young lad called Sean, was very informative and passionate about what he was doing. He answered our questions and educated us about life in these remote parts. Our horse Paddy was very well behaved and we got out when he needed a little rest, which we were only happy to do. Fair play to Sean for being a master at handling Paddy.
When we arrived in Killarney National Park, we had opportunity to eat something delicious from the menu. Visitors be aware that it was cash only. The size portions are very generous and the vegetable soup was delicious!
On the final part of our journey, we got into the motor boat with the highly entertaining and all-round brilliant guide - Dux! Dux brought his beautiful dogs Bob and Marley for the trip. They were so friendly and only added to the experience. Dux made us laugh from the moment we hopped on the boat. His knowledge of the lakes and mountains are incontrovertible - he is an incredible guide! I’d easily return to hear it all again with more people.
First time in The Kingdom, but you’ve made this Cavan man realise that it won’t be his last. Thank you!

This tour was great, we got a boat from Ross castle, cart from Lord Brandon’s and then we were returned to our car in Ross Castle. Everyone we met was very friendly and informative. The procedures had been updated for covid-19 and everyone was socially distanced, but this didn’t distract from the enjoyment! Highly recommended!

We very much enjoyed this tour! The Gap of Dunloe was gorgeous and the highlight of our time in Ireland. Our jaunting cart driver Pat (and his son Liam) were wonderful, informative, helpful, and genuinely kind people. Our boat tour guide was knowledgable and the boat trip was peaceful. We would do this trip again!

Our "guide" merely met us, showed us a map, told us where we were going. Then she left. Our two boat drivers did not say anything about any of the scenery along the way, and it was not anything noteworthy. Despite rain jackets, we were all soaked when we finally arrived after 3+ hours to Lord Brandon's Cottage. Our guide did not meet us there. We refused to go on the horse/cart back to town, as it was unprotected also, and we were cold to the bone. We arranged for a taxi-van to come out and pick us up, at our own expense. It was worth it to bail out of this trip. Plus the water level at the Lake was way down and one boat driver had to get out and drag us over rocks (with the help of another boat driver). Some people had to get out of the boat (to lighten the load), and they had to step off into cold 6"+ water (soaking their shoes). Maybe they should cancel this tour until there is at least enough water to handle it. Even then, I would suggest another tour instead.

On June 3, 2018 I took my family on this wonderful tour which takes at least 5 to 6 hours. Dress warmly as you will go over the top of the Gap of Dunloe in the Magillicuddy Reeks mountains and it can be quite chilly up there. Your reservation includes your being picked up at your lodging, transportation to the mountain road area where the jaunting car drivers line up. Then it's $25 Euros to the jaunting car driver per person for the 7 1/2 mile horse drawn cart trip. You wind up at Lord Bandon's Cottage where you can obtain food and beverages. Then you walk either to a dock (if the water level is high enough or, at this time the water was too low so everyone had to walk on a path through the marsh to the waiting 12 passenger dory boats for the river and lake trip back to Ross Castle near the Killarney Town Centre. Unfortunately the day turned quite chilly and although it wasn't too bad going down the river, when we reached the largest lake, Lough Leane, it was 48 degrees and very chilly. We were quite delighted to arrive at the Castle to be picked up by the waiting bus to take us back to our lodgings. So be sure to dress warmly and perhaps a raincoat is in order should the weather turn wet. All in all this is a wonderful tour which I have now done seven times over the last 33 years and I highly recommend it to everyone.

We started off at Ross Castle around 10am. I should also preface that this was in the first week of April 2019. We were met with a person with Tangney who showed us to our driver and "bus'. I'm front the US so the "bus" was just a van really. The driver took my family and another family up to the beginning of our trip through the Gap of Dunloe. The area was quite nice. There was a small cafe for coffee, tea, and food. From here we were shown our horse and a small cart. It's more like a small chariot or box with wheels. Our horse was Tom, and I unfortunately don't remember our guide's name. He was awesome nonetheless and pointed out things and scenery throughout our tour of the Gap of Dunloe. There were a couple of times we needed to get out of the cart to give Tom the horse a break and to make it up some hills. You have to remember the horse is pulling the guide and your party. If you have only 2 in your party there's no problem. For us it was just me, my wife, and our teenager. All together we weighed around 450 lbs. We also took a woman from the other group to help alleviate some weight for their horse. During the cart drive we experience sunshine, warmth, cold blustering wind, rain, snow, and hail. It was an awesome experience really. Along the way we saw an awesome landscape, natural streams & mini waterfalls, snow capped mountains, really green grass, sheep & really tiny lambs.

At the end is a small cottage with outdoor seating that served an awesome mushroom soup and a vegetable soup with bread. They also made sandwiches. There we waiting for our boat. During the hour wait we again saw rain, wind, and sunshine.

The boat back to Ross Castle was an adventure really. Our boat driver was awesome and quite funny. The boat driver did give us tarp to cover ourselves with and it did help keep you dry. If you were in the front of the boat though you took the brunt of the waves. The tarp did little to keep you dry at the front of the boat. Still the views from the lake were awesome. It would have been nicer if the weather cooperated but the tour company could do little to control the weather. Visitors should remember you are in Ireland and dress accordingly and come prepared for all 4 seasons. I would recommend bringing/wearing a waterproof jacket and pants if possible. At the very least have a dry change of clothes left in the car for your return.
Bring something to keep your face from getting wind burned. Just like any boat tour do remember the life jackets will smell. :)
