Belfast Troubles Historical Walking Tour

Overview

Since the official end of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Belfast has flourished, though the impact of the 30-year conflict is still keenly felt by those who live there. On this walking tour, you'll visit locations where key events took place and get an insider perspective on the conflict, its lingering effects, and Northern Ireland’s path to peace.

What to Expect

The tour runs once per day at 10.30am, except on Saturdays, when the start time is 2.00pm. It lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and covers 1.5 miles. The meeting point is the front gates of Belfast City Hall in Donegall Square North.

Your trained guides are among the most knowledgeable conflict historians in Northern Ireland. The tour is recognized as being unbiased, objective and historically accurate.  It is suitable for all visitors to Belfast, regardless of how much or little they already know of our troubled past.

Starting at Belfast City Hall, you'll visit 8 sites in the city center where some of the most tragic events of the conflict occurred.  The tour allows you to explore and understand the most turbulent period in Belfast’s recent past and what it was like to live here during the conflict.

You'll walk through the Cathedral Quarter and finish the tour on the banks of the River Lagan, beside the Waterfront Hall. The tour will also explain the peace-building process and demonstrate the reconciliation and regeneration which has taken place in the city since the ceasefires in the early 1990’s.

The tour is a way for you to get a real feel for the history of the city, as you are transported back in time through rich and detailed storytelling.  You will get to witness how far the city has come from those dark days and see Belfast in a new light.

The one which meets at the Belfast City Hall is entirely different, covering events from the early seventies which occurred in the downtown area.
