Explore Fitzrovia and Soho: two of London’s most characterful areas
What to expect
Meet your guide at a convenient location in central London’s Fitzrovia neighborhood. If you’ve selected the “Any Time, Any Day” option, pick your own departure time after 12pm. If you’ve chosen the Saturday Promenade option, your tour will begin in the late afternoon. Begin the tour by venturing into a pub and taking part in a beloved local tradition: the pub quiz. Test your knowledge on literary subjects, and sip a pint of ale, if you’d like (own expense). Next, continue to a number of literary-minded locations in Fitzrovia and Soho. As you go, your guide will share stories about the luminaries who once walked these streets, from Charles Dickens and Dylan Thomas to Karl Marx and Virginia Woolf. You’ll also watch re-enactments of key moments in British literary history, and learn about contemporary artists and writers like Paul McCartney and Damien Hirst. This tour concludes at the Coach & Horses pub in Soho.

Fun & informative
Sep 2020
A very entertaining and informative tour of literary Fitzrovia and Soho with our knowledgeable and entertaining guide Richard. We're Londoners, but learned a lot. There were several pub stops, always in appropriately distanced locations so that we felt quite safe.

To begin at the beginning... Fantastic Frolicking in Fitzrovian London
Jan 2020
A last minute booking during a Christmas break in London, which became the highlight of our trip. The tour trumped Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and The British Museum, although this is possibly due to the copious amounts of alcohol included.

Our guide, Richard, was extremely knowledgable, the tour was surprisingly interesting and we ourselves were adequately lubricated to form fond memories. This isn't a tour, nor does it claim to be, it is a pub crawl around a highly pub-ulated area of London in the company of an actor that knows alot about the literary roots of the area.

Richard met us in the first pub of the evening and proceeded to tailor the crawl specifically to our small group, the information was interesting, the beer was good and the whole event a great experience. Would highlight recommend this to people that like a good beer and appreciate a good book, if you're only a fan of one or the other, do it anyway!

A previous post says that the guide didn't point out the blue plaque of Marx, he did on our trip so you can be assured that feedback is addressed.

Surprising and fun!
I simply loved this experience. Our guide, Niels, was fun and very knowledgeable. We visit nice places that have a whole new image now that we know about the people that have been there. I really recommend this tour, specially because the guides are writers and completely passionated about literature.

Guided by a sensational character and actor we got to experience the literal history written in the walls of the wonderful taverns and the vivid streets of Soho.

Such an amazing night
I have to admit that we probably had a slightly different experience than others will have on this tour but it was incredible. I ended up having an almost private tour with my friend and my husband. Nick, the creator and writer of the Literary pub crawl, was our guide. It was pouring that night, and the three of us ended up being the only ones to show up for the tour.

Nick was our guide, and he sometimes took on a character but mostly took us around to the taverns on the tour, giving us insight into the historical literary past of the neighborhood along with his own experience working in the London literary/ theater/ movie scene. As the only true bibliophile of the three of us I loved all of the literary musings and tales of the Bloomsbury group, but my companions were also completely captivated. We ended the night at the Coach and Horses for a rowdy singalong that included showtunes and Frozen, and it was all in all the best way to spend our first night in London. Nick's knowledge of the area and insight into the literary history was delightful. It was one of the best tours I have ever been on.

Short and standard. No value for money.

I was spending a day alone in London and given that I love local pub crawls and literature, I decided that this pub crawl seemed like the thing for me. I ordered a last minute ticket (around 30 - 40 pounds) and set out for the tour.
Not used to London rush hour (my own fault) I was 15 minutes late, but luckily they were still in the first pub. I was the only guest together with a father and son. There was a younger writer and an older one. After a few anecdotes and a very short 'guess who wrote this'-quiz we set out for our tour with the young fellow.
Altogether it was a short one (about 1 hour, while we were promised about 2 hours), but I can't say I was sad it was over. The writer hastily read short segments in each pub, then let us drink something and spent the rest of the time on his phone. It seemed like he was in a rush (or just disappointed with the small crowd). I have never studied literature and I'm not even British, but even I already knew most of the stories he told us.
In short I felt let down and like I had wasted money. Sorry, but would not recommend.

Thanks for this. I think we answered your comments on Facebook too. If you booked through TripAdvisor, it must have been us, but we're very sorry. The tours are normally three hours - sometimes longer - so I'm not sure what happened to you. And we certainly don't charge £30-40! Come back soon and have another go for free. If you like local pub crawls and literature you'll love this, as most of our reviews show!

One of the best nights I've had in London!
Sep 2018 • Couples
According to my 83 year old mother this was the BEST experience in London. We met Nick Hennegan at a pub, had a drink and listened to the first of many a wild, well researched and wonderful tales about author's and their lives in London. We traveled London's back streets and learned many fantastic tales of the world of artists. We had drinks, made friends and just had the best time. I highly recommend this tour!

Awful customer service, avoid at all costs!!!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Myself and my husband with another couple booked onto the Saturday afternoon tour as part of a birthday weekend in London. The tour guide did not turn up at the appointed time and place. We contacted the company after waiting nearly an hour and were told that they were not able to contact the tour guide and we should consider the tour cancelled. At that time we asked for a refund but got no response. Since then, I have tried multiple times to contact them via telephone, email and social media requesting a refund. The 4 tickets cost £96, not an inconsequential amount of money to lose. Most of my messages have been ignored. Eventually, they have offered me free tickets at a future date. I explained that this is no good to me as we are expecting a baby later this year and I will not be travelling to London again any time soon. They then suggested that I could sell the free tickets on to my friends. Why would I do this when our experience with this company has been so appalling and their customer service is shocking! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!

Ouch! So sorry, Jessica. It was a pretty poor show on our part, but as you'd know if you been on the tour (!) we're actually all writers and artists and not tour operators, so we don't have a 'back office' as such. As we explained on Facebook, the writer who was due to look after you actually got run-over and was in hospital which was why nobody knew what was happening till some time afterward. But I'm glad you finally got a refund and if you ever do get back to London, come and see us again. As you can probably see from the other reviews, this was a very extreme situation. I'm sure - I hope! - we won't get another accident like this - and we'll buy the first round!

Informative and Entertaining
Feb 2018
We had only one evening in London and chose this tour to get a flavor of the pubs with the bonus of literary history and experience. The regular tour was not available this night, so my daughter and I booked the private tour. It was well worth it.
Nick led us through history, transforming himself into Dickens at the beginning and sharing information and the work of other authors throughout. Combined with good beer, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and great way to support the arts!

Thank you so much for this. Nick had a great time with you 'sharing the love' of literature, London and a few pubs! Thank you for your support.
