Overview
Add a little exercise to your exploration of Cape Town during this flexible-length running and history-themed city tour with a small group. Get in a workout as you tour city landmarks like the Castle of Good Hope, the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, Company’s Garden, plus much more. You’ll also learn about historic Cape Town figures like Jan van Riebeeck and Bartholomew Diaz.
What to Expect
Lace up your running shoes and meet up with your group and guide at Mouille Point Lighthouse. Your start time will depend on whether you’ve selected the morning or afternoon departure.

Begin your run by trotting through Cape Town’s Victoria & Albert Waterfront, one of the city’s more well-known tourist hotspots, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Table Mountain. Make sure to stop for a photo with the statues of South Africa’s four Nobel Prize recipients. As you continue running, learn about the history of Cape Town from your guide. You’ll hear about its initial exploration in the 15th century by the Portuguese and discover the story of Sir Lord Charles Adderley, an Englishman who helped prevent the city from becoming a convict station much like Australia.

Proceed next to the fort constructed by early Cape Town pioneer Jan van Riebeeck and see the five-sided Cape Town Castle. Just nearby is City Hall, a site known as the location of the famous speech given by Nelson Mandela following his 1990 release from prison. Then pass by the art deco buildings downtown and learn about the history of slavery in Cape Town as you proceed by the Dutch Reformed Church.

Check out the lush greenery of Cape Town’s Company’s Gardens before running down Queen Victoria Street, where you’ll learn more details about South African apartheid and see the Cape Supreme High Court. Keep pushing forward as you head uphill (the only hill of the day) and into the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood. This Muslim community is known for its rainbow-hued homes and cobblestone streets.

Head next through Cape Town’s trendy De Waterkant area and jog past the fanwalk, constructed for the 2010 World Cup, before finishing back at your original starting point.

The best way to experience Cape Town

I contacted Philippa a few days before I arrived in Cape Town and told her about my running habits and preferences. I had four runs with her and all four were breathtakingly amazing. Philippa is such a nice person and a really strong runner.

Lions Head Running Tour

Awesome run around Lions head on routes we would never have found ourselves. Stopped for water breaks and lots of interesting points of information along the way. Phillipa also took some great photos of us and send them on afterwards. Couldn't recommend this activity enough!
