What to expect
  • This summer, explore the glacial snow and ice of the Horstman Glacier in Whistler, British Columbia. Slide or glissade down the snow of this 10,000-year-old glacier in retreat with an experienced, local guide. Choose from a morning or afternoon departure time from the mountaintop office at Mountain Skills Academy. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure. Meet the guide, sign a waiver, and get outfitted with glacier travel gear, including boots, crampons, and ice axe. Then take the Whistler Gondola for a 30-minute ride to the glacier. Walk across a beautiful alpine snow slope or a breathtaking glacial morraine and wildflower meadow (depending on the time of year and the corresponding mountain conditions) while approaching the Whistler bowl and glacier. Look up to see the 2,160-meter Whistler Peak. Along the way, learn how the last ice age interacted with the terrain to form the beautiful coastal mountain ranges. This popular tour is great for people of all ages and abilities, and especially fun for families with children eight years of age and older. As is the case with all activities in the Canadian Alpine, each day is subject to rapidly changing mountain conditions. Check with the staff beforehand to see what the forecast is for any particular day.

Amazing tour!

This company clearly communicates once reservations are made. Reminders and additional information are emailed. When things don’t go exactly as planned (because an Iron Man triathlon takes over the area), they’re understanding and helpful. Our guide, Jake, was hilarious, informative, and a great guide. He offered to take pictures of our group and made sure we got them before we left. If we’re ever back in the Vancouver area, another tour is definitely in our plans!

Brought my twin 10 year olds from Phoenix to get some Alpine Experience
Feb 2019 • Family
I brought my family to BC this winter to do some skiing and get my 10 year old twins some alpine experience.

Eric and I set up a day on Whistler mountain proper to practice back country skiing, then we set a helicopter visit to the Tantulus mountains for High Alpine training and avalanche skills training and finally, rather spur of the moment, we flew out the the glacial ice caves. We spent 3 of 6 days of our with Eric and his crew.

We worked with Eric, Randy and Cleman

First and foremost, they are total professionals. Excellent teaching skills, adaptive, fun and they really got what I was trying to do for my kids. There equipment is well maintained and clean. They attempted to follow my skills goals, but they also adapted to my kids and the changing weather and natural opportunities. We had a blast.

There helo operation was well done, safe and the Astar flown by Dennis was clean, clearly well maintained and as safe as it can get. Again, total Pro's!

I would unconditionally recommend this crew to anyone looking for Back Country Skills or Heli Skiing.

We are already planning our return!

the tour was very good. Maya, our guide, was very knowledgeable and interesting. She was very patient with our group, giving us time to climb and helping us along the way. The glacier itself was beautiful.

Aug 2018 • Couples
This was a very informative and educational tour. Our guide was great and patient with our small group giving us time to climb and explore. I believe his name was Matt (we toured on 8/10/18). You not only see the glacier but find out how it formed the landscape and moved rocks and also get to look at the plants that pop up after the glacier recedes and even the bees pollinating the flowers! Very great tour.

My children and I had the best experience on the Glacier Discovery Tour with our guide Annie! The views were amazing, the tour was not difficult, and our guide was very informative and so patient with my son. We all enjoyed it immensely. I would definitely recommend this tour! My son even said " It was the best day ever!!"
