Athabasca River Scenic Float Trip

Select Date and Travelers
2 travelers
Join the fun on the Athabasca River for a unique perspective of Jasper National Park. The 16-kilometre, 2.5-hour round trip passes through many small sets of rapids and calm stretches, which allows your National Park licensed guide to point out the natural and human history of Jasper. This float trip is safe for the whole family, from toddlers and grandparents to swimmers and non-swimmers alike.

Rivers are rated on a scale of one to six. Class 1 is considered to be calm moving water while a class 6 would be equivalent to Niagara Falls. The section of the Athabasca River that this tour rafts on is rated a Class 2; meaning that there are some sections with rapids, which may get your backside wet.
  • Float 10 miles (16 kilometers) down the scenic Athabasca River
  • Life jackets and plastic ponchos are provided to keep you safe
  • Option to buy trip photos taken by a professional photographer
  • Hear guide commentary about the history of Jasper and the Rockies
What to Expect
Set off for the Athabasca River from the train station in central Jasper or arrange for pick up from your hotel. An afternoon of relaxing on the river is in store as you and your family sit back and let your guide do the rowing. Learn about the human and natural history of Jasper National Park from your guide, and stay on the lookout for wildlife in their native habitat. Plastic ponchos are provided as some splashes are expected but for the most part, this is a very gentle ride that’s enjoyable for all but the very youngest babies. At the end of the trip, you have the option to buy pictures from the professional tour photographer as you return to your point of departure in Jasper.

We were on a tour in June when the water levels were still extremely high due to a rainy spring. It was an interesting perspective to view the area from the river and our guide, Jim was full of funny and interesting stories. From the bus driver to the attendants, everyone made

We had a magnificent day rafting with this tour; when I say rafting, more like dawdling, as the day was a beaut, with the sun shining, the river meandering, scenery gorgeous and hardly a white top in sight. All safety aspects were taken care of at the beginning and although we

Thanks Barbara You are correct with your description of the Athabasca river being a class 1 and 2 river, its calm with a few set of rapids that provide a few splashes. You mentioned a few things that we try to emphasize- Fun, efficiency and safety!

We were expecting a quiet float down the river with the hope of seeing local wildlife and with the chance to relax. This was not the case as our guide seemed to want to talk and unfortunately so did so many of the passengers. There were also a number of rafts on the water so the

Hi Dawn I’m sorry that you had the wrong impression of what to expect on a raft trip with us. We do state in all our adverts that “A National Park licensed guide will provide commentary on the human and natural history of Jasper while navigating you along the same route used by the “fur traders” over two centuries ago.” We take pride in our raft guides being able to provide a funny and informative tour throughout the raft trip. We also encourage our guest to join in and ask questions along the way. Perhaps an option that might be better suited for you would be to book a private tour. You would have the whole raft to yourself and our guide could tailor the trip to your liking.
