Stop: 9 hours - Admission included
As we head out of Mexico City, we’ll make a stop at the archaeological wonder that is the Teotihuacan pyramids, where your guide will fill you in on the mysterious history of this sacred site. As you tour the grounds, you’ll see the Moon Pyramid, the Calzada de los Muertos (Dead Pass), and the Sun Pyramid, which is the tallest and most spectacular in the area — it’s 63 meters to the top (and yes, we’re going up). After exploring the pyramids, we will make our way to a family-run factory/shop that specializes in local products. We will learn about ‘obsidian’ — the material that the Teotihuacan people used to make their tools, idols, and decorations and you’ll be encouraged to take a sip of an ancient, sacred drink called pulque, which is extracted from the heart of the maguey (another kind of cactus) — considered by some to be the great-grandfather of tequila. On top of those gems, you’ll find jams, candies, spicy lollies and plenty more products made by local people from the endemic vegetation around them such as nopal, xoconostle and tuna (a cactus fruit, not tuna fish!). Souvenir shopping has never been this much fun! After working up an appetite climbing pyramids and shopping for souvenirs, we’ll take you to a friend’s house for a memorable dinner. You will be welcomed into their traditional home where you’ll try authentic, local flavors (the family run a very successful catering business, so you are in the right hands!) After dinner, we’ll head back to Mexico City, happy, full, and relaxed from our wonderful day exploring life outside the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Highlights
  • Go with a guide: Avoid the stress of navigating on your own
  • Panoramic views of the highlands from the top of the Sun Pyramid
  • Eat with a local family—an experience rarely available to tourists
  • Small group of 12 or fewer ensures an intimate, personal experience
What to Expect
Avoid the stress of navigating public transit on your own by meeting your guide at a centrally located metro station in Mexico City. On arrival at Teotihuacan, begin your walk through the ancient “City of the Gods.” On this small-group tour capped at 12 people, you’ll avoid the large crowds that gather for museum-run tours. Listen to speculation on the mystery of who could have built the massive structures and then climb the Sun Pyramid for panoramic views of the Mexican Highlands. After the tour, follow your guide to a neighboring town for a taste of pulque, an alcoholic beverage sacred to the Aztecs. From there, experience a side of Mexico rarely available to tourists at the home of a local family, where you sit down for a homemade meal in good company. After dinner, join the guide on public transit for an easy trip back to Mexico City.

The guide, Jacinto, was very friendly and knowledgeable and responded to us as individuals (there were only two of us on this tour). The excursion, however, finished two hours early: the 'dining experience' was in reality a bowl of Pozele served to us in a kitchen with just

This was an excellent tour that was much more than a visit to the site of Teotihuacan. Since I was the only person booked for this day day, it was essentially a private tour. My guide, Adriana, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and I felt very confident traveling with her. In
