Fairbanks, Alaska

Yes, you’ll need your parka—and a few other layers—to visit Fairbanks in January, but it’s the perfect time to chase the Northern Lights in this area. One of Alaska’s largest cities, the bustling metropolis is situated at a latitude that makes it the perfect place to see the aurora borealis. When you’re not taking in the majestic skies and serene mountain and river landscapes, partake in an array of winter activities—dog sledding and snowmobiling are particularly popular—or visit the nearby Chena Hot Springs to take a Northern Lights viewing tour and to visit the world’s largest ice museum.

Miami, FL

It’s always a good time to visit Miami, known for its sunny beaches, opulent hotels, and vibrant art scene, but January is one of the best, when holiday travelers are gone and spring breakers have yet to arrive. Our top recs? Explore the glitz and glam of South Beach and Ocean Drive, famous for its Art Deco buildings and beautiful people. Head to Little Havana for Cuban food and Calle Ocho’s colorful mosaics and artwork. Then visit outdoor museum Wynwood Walls, a beautiful collection of graffiti and street art murals, before dining at one of the many chic restaurants near the Miami Beach Boardwalk.

Stowe, VT

If snowy mountains and charming, fireplace-filled resorts are your vibe, look no further than Stowe, VT. January is not only the prime time for skiing in Stowe, but it also marks the city’s annual Winter Carnival, which offers activities like snow volleyball tournaments, ice carving competitions, and stargazing events. Make your way around the area’s many ski trails, experience outdoor activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling, then return to one of many cozy resorts, including the Austrian-inspired Trapp Family Lodge, which has ties to the von Trapp family made famous in The Sound of Music.

Phoenix

On the edge of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix is at its temperate best in January, when desert flora and red mountains are at their most beautiful and accessible. Hiking is a must during your visit and there are suitable trails for every level of hiker. If you want a challenge, tackle the Camelback Mountain Trail, whereas beginners might prefer Papago Park’s Hole-in-the-Rock Trail, which offers equally stunning views at a mere 825-foot round trip (sunset hikes here are particularly stunning). If water is more your thing, paddle your way around the mountains by kayaking through Lower Salt River or Saguaro Lake. Art lovers will want to check out the self-guided art tour in Roosevelt Row, then stop by Old Town Scottsdale for Southwest souvenirs and gourmet dining.

Aspen, CO

There’s never a bad time to visit Aspen, a luxurious Rocky Mountain town featuring designer boutiques, upscale restaurants, and posh resorts, but January is particularly enticing thanks to some of the country’s best skiing and snowboarding at resorts including Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, Aspen Mountain, and Aspen Snowmass, a local favorite. After you shred, shed your gear and head to the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster at Aspen Snowmass to experience what it’s like to ride on a luge at up to 28 miles per hour (try a night ride for ultimate thrills), or explore the famous Maroon Bells at Maroon Lake on cross country skis, snowshoes, or a snow bike. Then, head back to a swanky resort like The Little Nell for some après-ski fun.
