Alitalia (AZ) is the national airline of Italy. Headquartered in Rome, the airline's main hub is at the city's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO); secondary hubs are located at Milan Linate Airport (LIN) and Milan–Malpensa Airport (MXP). The airline, which is part of the SkyTeam alliance, flies to about 100 destinations, including airports within Italy, across Europe, and in Africa, Asia, North America and South America. Alitalia offers four classes of service depending on the route and aircraft. These are Classica (Economy Class), Classica Plus (Economy Plus), Ottima (short- and medium-haul Business Class) and Magnifica (long-haul Business Class).

PROS * Less expensive airline * Decent flight * Good boarding procedure * Good crew * On time arrival CONS * Older airplane * No food or beverage service * No in-flight entertainment or magazine * Not a lot of expansive legroom * Seat does not recline * FCO is brightly modern and refurnished and refurbished but it is stiflingly crowded and hot and confusing and unclear and no information or assistance person in sight- the rare isolated information booths were empty and unstaffed "I VISITED THIS PLACE"... ... because it was the best price for an intermediate stop of TLV to GVA. The flight was fine in Tel Aviv until arrival in FCO Rome (see above). The line to board the connecting flight was long confusing and windy and multiple. WAS IT WORTH THE COST? Probably, as it was the least expensive for what I needed WOULD 'I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN? Maybe, because i sure didn't enjoy FCO and don't want to transit though there again ADVICE * Know that it is no frills- no food and no entertainment * Beware of FCO…

On both legs viz Milan Linate to Rome and the return leg, the boarding process was a nightmare. One delay after another without any hint of an explanation from anyone. Once on board I found that the seats in economy are fit only for exceptionally small people. I am of average size and I have seldom been as uncomfortable in my life. I treated my wife who's family immigrated from Sicily to a two week trip in September. Having had amazing experiences in Italy - I've been there six times, I was thinking that the same quality, naturally, transfers to the airline since they essentially represent their country. BOY WAS I EVER WRONG!!! The quality of the plane (Chicago to Rome) - (Rome to Palermo) was awful. I upgraded thinking it was going to be spacious and I could barely fit. It was extremely uncomfortable and I'm over six foot. The seats are so packed together like sardines its unreal. The food quality was worse than dog-food and the staff was not very helpful in any way. Its a horrible horrible experience!!…

Awful airline. No room to sit. All crammed in. Alot of people in the plane. Felt like a sardine. Airline stewards not accommodating. Never fly again. Stay away!!!

On August 19, my partner and I were returning from Trieste to Madrid with a stopover in Rome on flights AZ1364 and AZ64, which left Trieste at 19:25. When we arrived in Madrid almost two hours late, we saw that they had lost our suitcase containing all our clothes and we filed a complaint at the airport. We were going back on vacation on 08/21 early in the morning and we had almost no clothes to take with us, which caused another unforeseen event besides the loss of the suitcase. When the suitcase arrived at my father's home on 08/21, it was left at the concierge's office because they were out of house and we were already travelling at that time. When my father picked it up, it was damaged and broken. I opened the claim on their website on the same 21/08 and after 3 emails I still haven't heard from them.…
